PRK before starting API?

Never heard of it being done. Everyone I know of has either gotten it before they got comissioned, or after they had their wings. Dont know for sure though, seems like a flight surgeon would be the one to talk to about all of that.

They told a buddy of mine that they would not even think about doing the paperwork until he got winged.

If the Navy won't do PRK for someone in A-pool could they have it done in the civilian sector since it seems they have a few months to kill anyway? I was actually hoping I would be able to do that after OCS while waiting for API.

You cannot have ANY sort of PRK/eye correcting surgery during flight training (A-pool, API, C-Pool, etc). You must wait until Wings, then it must be approved by your squadron CO. I've spoken with a few Winged studs and they said to wait until your shore tour.

Damn so if I go NFO that means I can't have it until (calculates) 2013 at the earliest. Well, here's to blindness!

Ever since the military started offering PRK I have been trying to get it done. I was told initially that it was DQ for subs so it was a no-go. So when I got picked up for STA-21 and got to my unit I found the closest MTF that offered it and began the paperwork. I did the screening over two years ago and was put on the waiting list to have PRK done at Keesler AFB in MS. When Katrina came through they were hit pretty hard and I was told that they were no longer performing the procedure there. I had pretty much chalked it up but I got a call this morning saying that I would probably be scheduled within the next month. I am currently in A-pool and was told recently it would probably be some time in June before I class up. Does anyone think its worth routing a chit? I know the worst they can say is no but is there any chance they would even entertain the idea?

This is also what the Flight Surgeon told me in Dec 2006. I had asked about this and brought it up as a possibility.
