Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

5th Helicopter Squadron stood up at JBA yesterday - its a pretty big deal to my AF helo colleagues in the office. Good looking patch. Its being advertised as a generational, revolutionary employment. The 25 or so UH-1N's are on a scramble alert posture (with a klaxon and everything) with timed aircrew runs from the alert shack to "cocked and loaded" aircraft where the right seater can crank up as soon as they are seated and the blade tie-down quick release pulled.

Is this possible with a Hawk? We'll see.

@hscs how quickly can you crank a aircraft from cold and dark?

Well, you know what they say about fast hands…..

It really depends on how the alert is set and what’s in the checklist. An Army H60 has fewer items to check than a Navy H60, driven by policy and risk (think overwater vs overland).

I would also offer that older aircraft could be started quicker, as you don’t need to wait for a glass cockpit to boot up.

I would also say that the ‘crank’ without strapping is PAO bs. You can start the APU, get strapped in while it starts, and then go do the rest. And lots of organizations also measure and practice alert responses.
