The Doctor is in! Ask a Flight Surgeon!

If anyone could answer this question for me I’d appreciate it. I’m currently enlisted and was selected for SNFO. I have had years worth of back pain (documented MRI for bulging discs , sciatica , radicular, physical therapy, x ray , whole 9…) I understand this is a DQ for aviation after spending all night deep diving through threads on here. My question is why did I pass my flight physical when I dropped my package if this is disqualifying? Does prior enlisted service where I’ve never been LIMDU or never been non deployable help? I’m sort of mentally preparing to get NAMI whammied upon arrival at ocs now .. my biggest fear is getting sent back to the fleet enlisted. I never lied or withheld this information but it’s 100% in my genesis record. Am I cooked? lol. Worst case scenario would I be able to redesignate to another community? I have read about others doing that in the threads but I didn’t see any of people showing up to ocs experiencing this from the fleet only street applicants..

was prior enlisted, had back surgery, recovered, commissioned then flew fighters. He’s posted his story multiple times around the forum years ago.

I also personally know a now winged aviator, prior enlisted, who commissioned with a sequence of prior back issues and surgeries sustained in service.

P302 of the guide onward expands into the specifics of a DQ v waiver but generally, if the underlying condition is fixed, a history of symptomatic injury and pain is not inherently disqualifying.

Have you done an actual flight physical where you saw a flight surgeon in person and they submitted everything to NAMI? Or did you submit your packet and be medically “approved to apply as an SNA?”

If yes to flight physical, then it’s a quick verification of basic eyes, ears, vitals at OCS. You won’t need to repeat the full initial flight physical.

If no, get one prior to going to OCS. Otherwise, youll be waiting with the masses in Newport and risk DQing there.
Worst case scenario would I be able to redesignate to another community?
Yes! Absolutely. You won’t be sent back to the fleet just for disqualifying medically from aviation.

@Mouselovr dude. Thanks for all the good info. That makes me feel a lot better (especially knowing I won’t lose my commission over it haha). I did do an actual flight surgeon physical. He passed me. I’m not sure if he sent it to NAMI or if when I submitted my application if they sent it if I’m being honest.

Someone who’s been through OCS more recently can probably chime in the name of the website used to check the status of the initial flight physical.

That should give you full transparency if you’re PQed for aviation in full.

I’m confused. Did you pass both your flight physical and commissioning physical and nothing changed?

Yeah I passed both. Submitted my package was selected for SNFO. I didn’t honestly think anything of my back at all but then the other night I found myself in a rabbit hole of air warriors threads and started reading about the NAMI whammies… haha. I think I’ll be good. I’ve just had some minor back issues after 11 years of naval service. Nothing that should stop me from the aviation pipeline ( I hope)

So what exactly is the issue? If you passed and there’s been no changes or recent issues - what’s the exact concern?

Because I’ve read In other threads that people had some sort of medical issue where still attained an aviation contract but upon arrival of ocs they get medically DQ from the doctors at OCS and redesignated or sent home packing.

This would almost always be civilians going to OCS and unless the situation is very bad medically they get the option to redesignate or they can choose to go home, they aren't sent packing.

Since you passed the physicals you should be good unless something gets aggravated at OCS which I did have happen with candidates, however that is low chance if you are preparing properly.
