Road to 350: What Does the US Navy Do Anyway?

China’s big Type 076 Amphibious Assault ship is in the news, launching and recovering drones. Wonder how much of a practical advantage this is, and if so, would it be possible to retrofit our gators with something similar?

Were not going to retrofit an existing capability to do this.

It would be too complex of an overhaul to be done on any built Wasp or America class ships. You would need to add a catapult and arresting gear, which would be a nightmare.

For group 5? Sure. For group 3/4? They don't need that stuff.

But for a retrofit, what capability do you give up that we have now, for the new capabilities that we don't have.

I can fly a Reaper for a long time over a very long distance.

I'm not so sure that the type 076 is really an amphib per se. The presence of a well deck is an indicator that it is, but the aviation component of its capability may very well be an indicator of another unique mission. For instance, load up the flight deck with the GJ21 attack drones, Z20 ASW helos and perhaps attack helos as well. I think it likely that the type 076 will operate with amphib groups, but perhaps in a fire support role. I'd be more confident in my wild-ass guess if I knew how large the well deck was...

I would not be surprised if the America and Tripoli (which don’t have well decks) would be considered for an angled deck conversion similar to the massive reconstruction of Midway in 1966 (straight deck to angle deck conversion), especially with the ever increasing capabilities of drones. Was curious to ask if the EMAL’s system would be easier to install than steam as this is evidently the catapult chosen for the 076. The comments above indicate it would not be possible.

You couldn't install a steam CATOBAR system on the America class unless you ripped up the propulsion plant and replaced it with a steam plant. If somebody suggested that NAVSEA 04/05 and the shipyards would probably take turns strangling them.

Makes sense given this:

After reading this 10 times, I am honestly asking this question. What are you trying to say here?
How many BHR sailors went to prison for refusing to perform their assigned damage control responsibilities after we lost a capital warship?

Literally sailors told the MIC "No, I won't don FFEs and fight the fire." For better or worse, we don't shoot people for this anymore (but I'd support it if we did).

How many enlisted servicemembers were convicted of a crime for violating their oath of office vs an actual order or regulation that carries real legal weight? Pro tip: zero.

The oath is fake news. Get over it. If someone disobeys an order, we'll "angrily" discharge them from an organization that they don't want to be a part of. They'll move onto a gainful career and lifers will think that they single handedly ruined the offender's life. Everyone wins.

DD Form 4 is the Enlistment/Reenlistment document for the US Armed Forces and is a binding legal document that includes an oath attestation section. Of course the services wouldn't convict someone under the oath. It specifically calls out the UCMJ as the vehicle for that. We convict 10s if not 100+ people per year across the services under Article 92. For less serious infractions we use Article 15 (CAPT's mast) because it's more efficient and beneficial for the service. That doesn't make the oath fake. It's literally the enabling document for the UCMJ. I still don't get what your argument is.

Sea lawyer bullshit.

Case law plz.

NJP isn't legal proceedings. The NJ stands for "non judicial." The process is to protect the CO from reprisal. You can take anyone to NJP for anything you want to.

We had about a dozen sailors refuse to perform their duties and it resulted in the loss of a capital warship.

Is it your contention that a refusal to obey lawful orders in that situation wasn't "serious?" I contend every sailor who refused to dress out should've been shot on site... but the oath is fake news, so the JAGs have other opinions.

"Oh nooo, the penalty for refusing to risk my life was a half month's pay for 3 months and an ADSEP... but I'm still alive and didn't die for a molten hunk of steel."

I bet those sailors totally regret their life decisions. I get that makes you mad but most sailors aren't lifers and have no emotional attachment to service.
