Future USS Doris Miller (CVN 81)

Heard today on a low validity YouTube channel that the MAGA crowd is trying to get CVN 81 renamed the Donald J. Trump. As a consolation prize to the Doris Miller crowd, Miller's Navy Cross would be upgraded to a Medal of Honor, and an unspecified alternate ship would be named Doris Miller.

In my opinion, SECNAV announced names for CVNs 82 and 83 late in the Biden administration precisely to forestall such a move.

And count me among those who would like to see CVNs Midway, Coral Sea, Lexington, etc.
I was wondering how long it would take the Admin to rename the ship after him while also simultaneously taking it away from Miller. Honestly, a lot longer than I thought.

Yorktown, Saratoga.

I know it won't happen, as politics are involved, but I wish we'd stop naming CVNs after Presidents and go back to naming them after battles.

To keep this line of thinking going and to distract from the utterly rage inducing current news on this topic, I wish we had some of the Adjective names that the British navy tradition has. Or the Star Wars Imperial Navy. If we're "blockading" baddies now, might as well play the part. I'm not sure what inspiration this one comes from, but how cool would it be to have three sister ships named Wraith, Rage, and Fury?

If the next administration is from the opposing party it'll get changed back. I would not be surprised the vast majority of things renamed the last few years get changed yet again, a modern day damnatio memoriae.

Absolutely. It’s already happening with the Kennedy Center. I doubt the Trump Institute of Peace will last long and I hope someone was smart enough to hold on to all that Department of Defense ephemera!

I've been saying this for a while, but the next sensible administration will need to create an entirely new agency to correct all the damage Trump has wrought. The DoJ alone will need to double in size just to investigate and prosecute all the insider trading and self-dealing violations, let alone the more serious stuff.

While I thoroughly get the sentiment, that would be a political mistake. The endless revenge thing is a significant part of what got him reelected. I’m not implying he’ll ever run again, but beating a dead horse sometimes brings the horse back to life so he can kick you. I believe it best to look to the future of the nation rather than burn billions throwing punches at a ghost.

While I tend to agree I think there are some things that just have to be returned to their original names. The Kennedy Center cannot be the Trump/Kennedy center. DoD, not DoW.

I'll concede the Confederate generals getting bases named after them. Whatever. We're not building new bases. Maybe the Dems should have named them after Revolutionary War generals/our founding fathers, rather than whatever political hot button they wanted to put forward. Fort Hamilton, Fort Jefferson, Fort Adams, Fort Paine, Fort Greene, Fort Gates. No way do you undo those names, and we all agree that they are heroes.

Ugh. Politics ruins everything.

Absolutely. I brought that up earlier in this thread. Just imagine how long it will take to scrape off all the fake gold he has splashed on, literally, everything.

Confusing justice with revenge is how we got here.
No, dismissing legitimate criminality as a political prosecution is how we got here. We cannot, as a society, hand-waive the wanton violation of law because it may be viewed through a political lens. That is moral hazard on a colossal scale. It is unacceptible.

With reference to investigating and protecting Trump, it’s fairly obvious he is going to pull a Biden and issue blanket pardons to everyone involved in his administration. There will, of course, be fruitless and wasteful “investigations” just like the Fauci clown show, but that’s political theater for the base.

Pardons look horrible, and they both insulate the party trying to claim retribution and prevent the one part of it that actually results in political consequences. Accountability polls really well; personal accountability, not so much. But if you give the person involved a "you can't do anything to me" card, the American people read it as guilt and become more fervent for the non-personal accountability. Blanket pardons at the scale the current administration is discussing all but guarantee that everything they build will be torn down on day one of the next opposing administration.

That cat (preemptive pardons) is a few years out of the bag. Besides, I don’t think Trump’s brain works like that.
