I’ll bite out of complete curiosity for how little I’m still qualified to do after being out for six years. If nothing else it will provide some entertainment for the forum.
O-3 P-3/P-8 NFO. Don’t really care if I fly anymore since the game has changed so much. What’s available thru the Jax NOSC?
So if you are not interested in Flying, you have quite a few choices. If you really want to be in a local unit and in a NFO billet, there are a a few 1325 billets at TOC JAX and also looks like a TOC HQ unit also at Jax.
But you can also apply for units outside of Jax, looks like most are Honolulu, FT Worth, DC. Keep in mind, and you would need to look at each billet, but the majority of these units might only get together 3-4 times a year as a unit. The vast amount of work will be done outside of a Drill Weekend either directly supporting a fleet customer, or doing work remotely.
As a NFO, you also have the option of applying for 1XXX jobs that any URL officer can apply for as well as a 15XX positions. Side note, some pilots and NFOs redesig to 15XX and affiliate with the NRP community (NAVAIR Reserve Program).
In Jax there is a reserve FRC unit you could apply for. When I was XO of the Norfolk FRC unit, it was common for the NRC to place new Local RC Pilots and NFOs that just came off active, into my unit in a temp status called (IAP). Each had their own story, but a few were still in process of applying for a Reserve Aviation Screening Board, some really had no idea what they wanted to do. In any case I helped them figure things out.
Most did not stay in the unit long.
One thing you will find out in the reserves, if you ask 10 different guys how to do something, you will get 20 different answers. As one of my buddies once said, SELRES is an old Spanish word meaning "maybe".
If you are a active member leaving service or a prior service member, reserves can be a rewarding experience.
But with all the options, it can be confusing.
If you or anyone else needs additional info, PM me or ask right here.
