Hello everyone! This is my very first post on here and I’ve been using this website as a source for months to gain extra information on applying to OCS, studying for OAR, etc. I apologize ahead of time for this long post. I never thought I would make a post on here as I used my recruiter as my main source of information/communication. However, I do believe after som thought that I have a valid question that I’m trying to receive feedback on…
So a little about my situation…I’m currently applying for as a Supply Officer. I began my process back in January of this year and went through MEPS, OAR, and completed my package. Supply boards have been getting pushed back since my intended board date of May 2025 so I have yet to submit my application. As this process has taken some time, which I expected, I’m starting to doubt my medical issues that I currently deal with. My whole life I’ve had asthma, always had an inhaler and even taken a Pulmonary functions test in 2023 that still says I have asthma. As someone who always wanted to join the military, I’ve been told “no” my whole life due to it. Up until last year I heard word about the military having “less-strict” medical requirements so I took a gamble and got in touch with a Navy Officer recruiter. Went through the process and took the OAR and went up to MEPS knowing that I’d need a waiver. After my physical, I was told I was disqualified (obvious) and needed waivers. I was honest with everything with my asthma. Three days later my recruiter told me that N33 came back and said I needed no waivers. I was shocked and just surprised as I felt like it was impossible as with my recruiter. I still had a PFT saying I had asthma from 2023 and had inhalers prescribed to me 3 years ago. After that, I filled out my application and I’m in the waiting game. So I’ve been running outside and inside (aaprox. 1.5 miles to 3miles 3x a week). Most days I’ve felt fine with breathing and having no issues but sometimes I have trouble with my breathing (wheezing, tightness) after a run. I consider myself in good shape still but it concerns me because even though I didn’t need a waiver for asthma and they see that I still have it and I ship off to OCS and experience issues will I be done? Will they give me medication? Is that disqualifying then or would they try and keep me there? I just don’t want to run the risk of failing and going through all this hard work because of a pre-existing medical condition that didn’t require a waiver. I already talked to my recruiter about it and he wasn’t sure. My brother is a Marine and Army vet and had told me back when he was in that they can give you an inhaler but this is Navy OCS so it may be different.
I appreciate those who have read this long post. I know there may not be a clear cut answer but I thought it was worth a consideration to make a post about this if there’s anyone whom may have seen or heard of any experiences that are similar to mine.
Have a wonderful day!
