Random Griz Aviation Musings

Sort of funny WSJ article on getting intercepted: Flying a Plane Is Fun Until You Enter Restricted Airspace.
Saw it once in the DC FRZ. I was cleared to enter the Gruby gate when I noticed a 172 about a mile off entering on a parallel course. I called out to him on the correct frequency and didn’t get a reply. I jumped over to fingers, tried again, and still nothing. At that point I could feel the F-16’s taking off from Andrews. I just moved over a bit to get some separation and sure enough in under a minute Potomac informed me that interceptors were arriving in the area and to keep my course and speed as required to get to KVKX. As for the 172…free air show!

IIRC a couple of years ago when they asked one of the folks who wandered into DC's restricted airspace why they didn't follow the intercepting HH-65, the pilot claimed they didn't know what the Dolphin crew was trying tell him with their hand gestures and would have followed them if they just used a sign.

Sooo....Voila!

Yes, that is an electronic sign in the rear window.

I've always wanted one of those for my car, but then I'd probably be more likely to get shot if other drivers actually knew what I thought of their driving choices.

That sign is actually part of a larger LE package that the CG uses for AUF. Some sort of signaling is required (along with radio calls on BTB).

I'm guessing the FRZ dudes called down to Cecil for the NSN part number before ordering (kidding).

Maybe used during interdiction missions?
I see almost no use during a SAR pick-up.
I saw the this exact aircraft perform a simulated SAR mission for the crowds at JB MDL's airshow in June of this year and it was not displaying anything.
Or if it was, it definitely did not catch my attention.

CAP conducts TOI exercises with both CG Helo and ANG F-16's using these technologies. The e-signage was developed especially for the NCA defense mission.
