Switching from SNFO to SNA

FormerRecruitingGuru

Making Recruiting Great Again
After 3 months of summer camp, I can check OCS off the bingo card, and now I can look ahead to sunny P-Cola for flight school. With that being said, I am joining the SNFO community, which i did not mind at all but I was just told by one of my roomates that i am moving in with who is a SNA himself that when he checked in today there is a 5-6month wait to class up for NFO and only 3 weeks for SNA since they are over accepting NFO and are having SNA shortage. I am medically cleared for both designators but how can i go about on wanting to lateral transfer to SNA before I start NIFE? is this something that i would need to contact the flight community manager??

Maybe get to Pensacola first? If there’s availability they will let you know…

I know of someone that recently changed to SNA after selecting strike out of SNFO primary. He was trying to switch ever since he arrived to OCS. My understanding only three studs have been able to pull that off and his situation was unusual. He not only killed it in primary but was older so he wouldn't be eligible for transfer after his first divo tour and at that point it depends on the commodore to sign off. Very much a longshot

A few things to ponder, if they are "short" on SNA's why are they declining those who apply SNA that have good scores and no non-medical waiver issues, and also if they are "short" on SNA's why are those who are getting picked up having to wait 4-6 months to go to OCS?

This sounds like it could be more of a rumor thing than an actual fact considering anytime the USN has been actually short on a designator they are shipping them out within weeks of being notified of being selected, which they could have done with those in the last board in order to get them to be FY 25 accessions. It is possible they had SNA heavy classes that graduated early in FY 25 as those who were getting ISEL middle to end of last year were shipping out fast.

Not to burst your bubble, but the flight school rumor mill about making the SNFO-SNA switch has always been a thing. Everyone knows a guy who has supposedly done it, but it rarely if ever actually happens. If there is a need for folks to make the switch, then the leadership down there will advertise it. I would not recommend contacting the community manager. Focus on being the best SNFO you can be, and be prepared to apply for the transfer after your first fleet tour if you’re still interested in becoming a pilot at that point.

Never heard of that happening before, not saying it didn't but that is likely exceedingly rare.

It happened in the last couple of months; they're sending him to corpus christi for primary.

Certainly a very exceptional thing then, we had a few 'hot runner' SNFO's when I went through and they were all out of luck transition-wise until they got qual'd in the fleet. The only other instance I know of was being able to switch during A-Pool if you were physically qual'd and they needed SNA's, but that was very uneven over the years and often was not an option. After starting Primary though, no dice.
