Howdy, I just took the ASTB and I'm curious of how I stack up for the coveted SNA slot.
BLUF: I realize that my AQR is noticeably lower than the recommended 7, but I have a small window to retest. I'll have roughly the same amount of time to study for a second take as I did for this one ~ three weeks, in several months. Would it be worthwhile to retake, with the risk of losing my PFAR and FOFAR score to rise AQR to a 6 or 7? I would not have time to do a 3rd test.
GPA: 3.36
ASTB: 51/5/7/6/63
Degree: Marine Transportation
A short bio, as I'm not sure what would be useful for the board process. I'm a senior (graduate Jan of '26) and I'm currently in NROTC with a 1665 designation (SSO). Long story short, I was told that it would be possible for me to get into Naval Aviation a couple weeks ago and it's been in a whirlwind to try and open the door to switch. I am not super familiar with the process and expectations, and the unit's NA got orders last semester and the role is temp filled by a submariner (so we're both operating blind). I am 28, prior Marine (4 years, honorable discharge), and no flight experience of any kind. I believe I can get a very good recommendation from my unit CO as well, if I asked. I'm not sure what else is leverageable for the selection process.
For my degree I will spend the summer at sea in a rigorous academic setting, and then I begin the fall semester taking the most difficult/important classes of my degree. Hence why I have a short window to prepare for a second attempt, from the end of cruise to when the courses start to pick up in intensity.
My package for SSMP to AD is due roughly Oct 1 (I think), so my window to properly and effectively study and retest is from late August to mid/late September. I'm uninterested in any designations other than SSO or SNA, including SFO.
Thank you for your time.
