It's sad seeing all of the tri-engine planes head to the boneyard. I always thought they were so cool.
Cheaper to retire a 'small' fleet of unique aircraft like that than an equivalent or larger number of a larger fleet. Now you can get rid of the entire support infrastructure for that fleet from depot to training resources. Like the CSAF said several years ago, the USAF would have to retire 3 times as many F-16's to get the same savings as retiring the entire fleet of A-10's.
Civil aviation too. Always thought the L-1011 was so cool as a kid. I also thought the 727 was super cool looking. Just looked fast to me.
