I'm not sure I waxed poetic about a free press. I think having integrity and objectivity is good for journalists and a good ideal but I also think that it's an ideal vice an enforced standard. At the end of the day, i see it as more about establishing and selling trust as part of the media business.

That said a free press is an agreement between the govt and the media businesses. It means a media business can print what it wants. It has nothing to do with them printing what you want. I think people have a fundamental misunderstanding about that and makes them think otherwise.

I also think the GOP can do whatever they want but shouldn't be surprised if their actions and words have consequences. If the GOP were savvy they'd find a way to use the media as something other than an enemy.
“The media is mean to the GOP because the GOP says mean things about the media” is one of the most ridiculous things I’ve read on this site

Again, agree to disagree.

If you look at the actions the media has taken in the past year, COVID, election, riots, everything, and you still think they are “your friend” and/or “friends to the average Joe” then I have bridge in Brooklyn I’d like to sell you.

Now am I talking about the small town weekly with a limited distribution who’s covering bake sales and church dances? Of course not. Nobody is.

Somewhat more relevant to the thread. The officer allegedly murdered at the Capitol reportedly had no signs of blunt force trauma.

“In a statement the day after the insurrection, Capitol Police said that Sicknick had been "injured while physically engaging with protesters" and collapsed as a result of his injuries sometime after returning to his office. He died the next day in a local hospital.”

“According to one law enforcement official, medical examiners did not find signs that the officer sustained any blunt force trauma, so investigators believe that early reports that he was fatally struck by a fire extinguisher are not true.”

Where did I say any of that? I said pretty much the exact opposite.

I said it was chicken and egg and I'm not sure who started it. But recently the GOP has certainly not used the mainstream media to their favor or done anything to enable that. They've done the exact opposite and then act surprised when the media doesn't shower them in adulation.

The media’s job isn’t to shower anyone with adulation. It’s to report the facts. And sometimes have op-ed’s.

And that’s a childlike understanding of the situation. Being nice and saying nice things won’t change the coverage. GW Bush was a war criminal trading blood for oil. Now he’s a nice guy again. It wasn’t his behavior that changed, it was his position.

Had a co worker die after being involved in a fight with a suspect where he was kicked in the chest. He subsequently had a heart attack during the combat , which was ruled to have not been the result of the suspect's actions. Times have changed, but if reports are accurate, a murder charge in Mr. Sicknick's case would be hard to make.

Weird that it was so widely reported that he was murdered with a fire extinguisher
There were rumors flying around post-Katrina of unspeakable acts being committed in the Superdome that turned out to be false. When you have a lurid situation, these things happen. No conspiracy needed, just human nature.

Yeah, you're missing what I'm saying or maybe I'm not being clear enough. There are other ways that the GOP can engage with the media beyond just publicaly. Also the GOP (and any party) can change their message so it speaks less to the base and isn't as "shocking" and more palatable. Essentially a media engagement and marketing strategy that is more than just saying how awful the mainstream media is.

No, it's not. It's job is to make money. You keep confusing what you want the media to do with what the media actually does. If you don't think a political party's engagement with the mainstream media isn't mostly a popularity contest and can be made or broken by the media then you're kidding yourself. Because of this control of the news/facts/opinion/rumors the media has always had a huge control lever over and ability to shape politics and always will with a free press. Political parties and personalities ignore this to their own peril.
