The cobra is already gone and it’s going to be a while before our 53’s are all kilos. Regarding F-35 stuff I really like some of the interviews with David Burke, the Marine pilot who flew F-16s, F-18s, F-22s, and F-35s. He’s also on the podcast scene as he works with Jocko’s leadership consulting company. His opinion on the F-35 is overwhelmingly positive.

I’ve seen Jocko’s podcast several times but I’ve never heard of David Burke, I’ll do a little digging to see what he has to say. Thanks for saying something because if you hadn’t I definitely would not have known who that was or where to find him.

Yeah he’s badass. On top of flying all those platforms he went to Top Gun and did a FAC tour, during which he worked with Jocko’s SEAL team.

I was stumped on that one too, until I remembered the AH-1Z is called the "Zulu" or the "Viper".

Yeah, I'm just being a dickhead. There's always been a laughably ineffective push for Z/Y guys to call their aircraft Viper/Venom vis Cobra/Huey.... can't say I ever remember checking into the stack with a bunch of "Thunderbolt IIs" and "Fighting Falcons"...

I hear you; it's common in VFA for guys to say "Shoot, shoot, fighting falcon!" during VID drills, just to annoy the adversary F-16 guys. After all, it is the correct NATO name for the aircraft...

Politics, as @Python1287 said.

The F-35B is the only version that can hover, the Marines are the only ones who have that version, and that's the only version the Marines have.

The Marine Corps always seems to be subconsciously worried that their funding will get cut and they'll be absorbed into the other services. The Army has successfully done amphibious ops (more like used to but don't anymore- it's been decades), the Navy flies aircraft and helicopters off ships, the Air Force flies off land, the Army has plenty of doctrine—and real capability when there's a crisis in the world—for quick reaction force/light/agile/elite and they've flown their helicopter off of Navy warships from time to time. Those things are kind of a political threat because politicians might look at them and ask what the Marine Corps brings to the table that's so unique.

It's not an entirely fair question but there you go. The phrase "second land army" has come up a lot in the last twenty years of campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan- food for thought about politics.

(Your question about why the hard stance agains the Super is a fair question. The political question is mixed.)

TLDR for those who care:
Congress says: "I get why I have an Army, Navy, Air Force, and [Space Force]. I kind of get why the Navy has it's own Army and Air Force. But why does the Navy's Army need it's own Air Force? What's special about them? They go to the same flight school..."

It’ll be a cold day in hell when I ever say “viper.” Just typing that made me throw up in my mouth.
But yeah, cobras are gone and we shoulda bought the export J-11 instead of RQ-21...

Shit man, you put just about anything in between that bolded statement and it would be the truth.

Reaper. KMAX. A six pack of O'Doul's. Snickers fun size Halloween candy bag...

Edit: We've done some good work with that airplane. But we were limited by what we had, not by the capability of the Marines who flew it.
