I remember in that comic strip when Shoe's nephew Skyler was excited about his summer trip to Paris - instead it was a bus trip to Parris Island....

Shoe was a good one, a real good one, but the top level was a tie between The Far Side and Calvin & Hobbes.

That's one of the reasons he hung it up, as I understand it. His publisher was always pestering him to milk the cash cow, and he kept saying "no" to licensing and merch. If you look at a lot of the art-related spoofs he did where Calvin was the "tortured artist" pressured to pander to the masses, Watterson was actually lampooning the relationship between him and his publisher.
