I have seen some ads for Darden Univ Virgina and also Colorado State University.

University of Houston at Victoria.....Reasonable price...professors very flexible when I was at airlines and with my current Navy service. Vet Affairs needs a nudge every once in a while to make sure paperwork is correct. Satisfied overall.

Indiana is the highest ranked business school with an online MBA, iirc.

Concur. Other reputable programs (i.e. not University of Phoenix) include Arizona State, Florida, and Penn State. They might cost a bit more, but when it comes to the MBA, reputation and alumni networking are huge. If you're really concerned with costs, you might want to reconsider getting an MBA all together.

I did not read the articles you posted but how do online degree and alumni network. I have always felt alumni networking and networking in general for jobs are fantastic when you actually meet the person. Don't have experience with online degrees and networking but I am curious to hear the success/failure. Also, school sponsored career fairs are huge for the big name schools/programs. The big companies will send their recruiters to recruit the best. You would expect that you at least get something like that after fvcking over a few thousand wad. As an online guy, are you going to be flying in for those or will they even let the online folks attend such functions?

I think I would want to know the earning potential of an online degree from any of the big names before I rack up student loans. Return on investment might not be worth it. I have never been to an MBA class but friends that have been(ex-Marine/Navy officers) say it is all a big networking thing.

Dunno how it is for the USN peeps, but in the USAF there are two starkly different kinds of MBAs (and there are really only two types in general);

1. The ticket-punching MBA that you get in order to get promoted to O-4/O-5, and
2. the MBA you get from a more reputable/difficult school so that it has value outside of the military.

The fallacy of item #2 is that it doesn't really matter in the real world. Several years ago I had a very enlightening conversation about MBAs with the father of a squadronmate who is the CEO of a Fortune 500 company. He said, "there are two types of MBAs: those from a top-tier business school like Wharton, and everything else. Every online degree falls into the 'everything else' category."

So, don't fool yourself into thinking that the flavor of online MBA you get really matters. If you're ever going to apply for a job, and market yourself based on your education, then you need to bypass all of the schools mentioned in this thread, get out of the military, and go get a real MBA.

Had the Dean of the Finance Department of the school I attended tell me, "Don't waste your time/money on an MBA unless its from a top school. You will learn more by getting your Master's in Finance."

Don't have any experience personally with MBA, but my familia does so here are my two cents:

My brother went to a top-tier MBA school, had a helluva time trying to land a job (his top choices were Bear Sterns, AIG and Morgan Stanley...go figure) and the reason he finally got his job was because he took a class from an adjunct professor who ran a small firm. The prof liked my brother and hired him. That sort of thing PROBABLLY wouldn't happen at the University of Phoenix...just saying. All of the top MBA schools (Northwestern, UCLA, Harvard, Wharton and Columbia) are huge into recruiting military officers, both separated, active and reserve. They have associations/clubs dedicated to helping mil people network and survive the programm. If I were you, skip the online any degree, especially MBA and take advantage of EMBA/full-time programs at top-tier schools during shore tour of if/when you get out.

Again, I'm nary more than a Midshipmen, but my brother and dad both got MBAs so I hear about the stuff cooooonstantly. Hope this helps

Jumping on DAS's point...the Navy has soooooo many opportunities to get grad education at top tier universities (including one's owned and run by the Navy). It was one of the reasons that I chose to go Navy and is definitely worth looking up. Check out Bupers website, officer assignments under education placement. Really, really cool opportunities afforded to very few.

+1 Million. I worked at a General Electric before the Navy and the same thing was told to us by the brass when we got to do meet and greets/lunchins/etc with them. The "Everything Else" is a "Check in the Box" degree for advancement.

Executive MBA Programs from a Top 100 school are where you make your money. The one at my alma mater, Marquette, (highly rated btw) was two nights a week plus Saturday mornings. And the Saturdays were catered seminars/speaking engagements where you got to actually network. The hardest part was getting in.

Very true. After reading this thread I did some looking, and it seems like a good 5-20% of these classes are former military officers.

My hometown school (Cornell) even has a dedicated brochure for military types.

what types of positions/jobs are military types landing at the big corporations ?

For example, a Submarine commander (there are no subs outside of the military) what type of skills, resume is articulated and what kind of jobs are being landed.

Obviously, leadership, critical thinking, etc but I wanted to ask

He said, "there are two types of MBAs: those from a top-tier business school like Wharton, and everything else.
And Wharton has a program "offering" their students to go to Quantico, VA for a VERY reduced USMC OCS experience:

http://wlp.wharton.upenn.edu/MBA/quantico.cfm

Which leads me to the statement - "There are two types of military services. The Marine Corps, and everything else." :D

And in my searches, I found this video. These guys are WAY too into getting an MBA:

As for the OP, what do you want your MBA for? PSW wanted to own her own business (I met her midway through her MBA program), so the whole "this is the way the business world looks at anything other than Wharton" didn't matter. She got hers through UMUC, a hybrid program - but they do offer a full online program. From what I saw of her studies, it seemed pretty legit - and gets good ratings in the magazines about this stuff...
