transforming a girlfriend into a dependent without a ring?

I don't know if this is possible or not, but I was wondering if there was any way to make a girlfriend into a modified sort of dependent without the pay incentives. (i.e., access to base resources, work visa, resident status, job placement, etc)

Long story short, I'm moving to Japan in a couple of months, and my girlfriend wants to take the opportunity to also live abroad and maybe find a job in Tokyo. Minus all the "this has backfire written all over it" advice, have any of you tried doing this abroad with someone that wasnt your wife/husband/kid?

Knowing nothing about it just yet, I see it as being logistically tough without some of the support/protection that comes with marriage and neither of us are looking to do that at the moment.

Much thanks if you've got any experience you can lend.

Adopt her. Nothing weird about that.

Serious answer? No. She can follow you over there, but she won't be considered a dependent.

If it's not a relative in your direct care, spouse, or child, DoD is not going to offer any help. You're going to have problems with that Status of Forces Agreeement as well.

Either get married or she's going to have to sort through the visa and job issues like any other average Jane US citizen trying to work overseas.

are you not trying for the big huge wedding ceremony, or just not ready for marriage? without being too personal, if its the first, you could always just go to a civil servant (whatever they call a Judge/JOP/magistrate) wherever you are, and make that jammy official that way, and bam, 1 problem solved...1 life ended.

Depends on what she does. It is possible to get a civil service job on base, but I wouldn't count it. A large portion of the civilian jobs on base go to Japanese nationals. If she did get a civil service job, she would have on base priveleges similar to what a dependant gets, including exchange/commissary priveleges (I believe this is unique to overseas locations).

She could also apply for a working visa and get a job out in townand as long as you live off base, she would be able to live with you, but that's probably the best you could do. In this case, she wouldn't get any priveleges and you would have to escort her just to come on base. Either way, I wish you luck.

Ditch her. Plenty of cute mamma-sans over there to love you long time. ;)

Just kidding... but anyway, I think your question is pretty much answered, no you can't get any bene's unless she's your wife or you adopt her (haha, I def chuckled when I read that).

So, with nothing further that could ever come from this thread apart from a lengthy threadjack on a multitude of other issues.... I foresee a lock in the near future (rubbing my imaginary crystal ball... ooh yeah, that's the spot...)

At least this cat has his head screwed on straight though - no marriage, no problem. :D
