We named a ship after Jimmy Carter because we had a Dem in the White House at the time. Likewise why we have Truman (WJC's favorite president) and why subsequent carriers were named for Republican presidents. Currying favor for ships with their names is just how we roll nowadays.

The current President's infatuation with Lincoln is well known, but that ship has sailed, as it were. All 20th Century Dem presidents have ships named for them now, except Clinton, LBJ and Woodrow Wilson, so I'm not sure how CVN-79 will go...I understand there's a movement to name it Enterprise after CVN-65 is decommed...might sell that one if Obama's into Star Trek...
