Today is the anniversary of the MIssion Beyone Darkness. Launched
at exteme maximum range the USN pilots knew some of them would not
have enough fuel to return. They also knew they would have to land at
night, something that was not routine at that time. Yet go they did, and
they would go on to decimated what remained of the Japanese Combined
Fleet.
ADM "Pete" Mitchner would forever earn the love of his aircrews as
he gave the order to "turn on the lights" to better facilitate their return.
This was despite the fact they were in an area with enemy subs. Many
more men were lost to ditching than were killed in combat, but most
were rescued and lived to fight another day.
