Impressive, but 'twas a shame it couldn't give up that nasty smoking habit!;)

We loved it! The smoke emphasized our 'meanness'.

But when on a hot vector in training and in combat, we always went "min-burner" which not only did not leave a tell-tale burner puff like the old F-8, but also left no black smoke for the enemy to see, and with very little gas penalty. It leveled the playing field against the Migs.

"Cats, cross turn, now! Cats, min-burner, now!" "Let's go!" Yeeee Haaaaaa!!!!!!!

but also left no black smoke for the enemy to see

When in '66, we were losing an inordinate number of F-4Bs & A-4Es (A-4Cs do not smoke, different engine), our CAG sent a 4-page classified Msg to DC titled "SMOKING CAN BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH"! Among other things, it gave the loss statistics on F-4s & the higher loss rate for his A-4E Squadron (VA-55) compared w/ his A-4Cs (VA-146). The reply talked about a smoke-abatement system under development for the Phantom. and E model Skyhawk. Don't know if this ever came to pass...Catmando?

Smoking is suspected to be contributing factor in the enormous loss rate for CAG-16s 2 A-4E Squadrons.

bzb - yes there a mod to reduce the black smoke, but I don't remember when it was implemented.

However min-burner worked even better, and was taught to the initial TopGun classes.

Thought I'd post our 2011 Tactical Unit photo with Roman 350, a Charlie jet which was in town for the Milwaukee Air & Water Show last weekend.

Fantastic!! The only thing that could make it even better would be to turn the music down a bit and turn up the Merlin....
