I knew about the probe doors on the Tomcat. What was the reason for that? Seemed to be a random thing.

They broke off a lot when tanking from "hard-hosed/hard-basket" KC-135 tankers. Just too much of a routine FOD-hazard to worry about. I think the Iranians still leave them off. Same reason.
