Sad. Mostly Cold War relics, I suppose.During my time on Active Duty, these 4 ships represented one-fourth of the carrier force (16 ships in commission). Nowadays, 4 carriers would be almost HALF (only 10 carriers currently in commission or not "inactive").
I remember a day toward the end of Vietnam we had six carriers in the narrow Gulf of Tonkin. One arriving, one departing, and the other four conducting strike ops against North Vietnam.
Given the already restricted space of the Gulf, then decreasing it by increasing buffer zones from both China and the North, it was like playing bathtub-bumper-boats for the carrier’s captains… including IFR launches into another carriers Case III recovery, etc.!
