Enterprise Fire 1.jpg Enterprise Fire 2.jpg Enterprise Fire 3.jpg A couple days late on this one but...

On January 14, 1969 the carrier Enterprise (CVAN 65) suffered a catastrophic fire while conducting flight operations off Hawaii. Caused by the detonation of a Mk-32 Zuni rocket warhead that was overheated by an aircraft starting unit, the fire killed 27 crewmen and injured 344 others. In addition, fifteen aircraft were destroyed.

My Navy Class Officer in AOCS Class 26-71 (we had one Marine, and one Navy) was one LT Ron Schneider, an F-4 RIO who'd been on the flight deck during the initial explosions, and somehow went into the water as memory serves. He was a red-headed, naturally freckle-faced guy…except on one side of his face below the visor line. Good guy.

Was John McCain also involved in this as an on-deck A-4 pilot, or am I confusing two different FD fire mishaps?

I think McCain was Forrestal. The other big flight deck fire was Oriskany.

The Oriskany's fire wasn't a deck fire, but a flare locker fire caused by an airman who tossed the ignited flare into the flare locker.

On January 20, 1914, one hundred years ago today, the first naval aviation personnel arrived to establish an aeronautic station at Pensacola, Florida, the birth of the "Cradle of Naval Aviation."

Might have posted this a long time ago (not sure, and too lazy to search) but decided the helo's were becoming too numerous, so it was time to add some variety :p. Two A-4E's from NFWS and a TA-4 from VA-127 enroute to the overhead at NKX after some DACT in the Whiskey areas, circa May, 1985.

Cool pic but helos too numerous... does that speak to the laziness of the fixed-wing brethren? ( just kidding, by the way)... I think this entire site has gotten "lazy". It used to be fun to check for updates. Now... not so much.

Ok, ok, I'll post some pics. They're only from my iPhone 4S so they're not great but you get the point:

Hey, I was born lazy. Now you know why some thought that my callsign came from the amount of paperwork I used to do :D. By the way, if we'd had digital cameras back in the day, I'd have thousands of more pics than than the couple thousand slides that I have now awaiting to be digitized.
