Oh, I meant for the pilots.

Because it's a crap load of fun to fly. It's all stick and rudder (or TR pedals as the case may be), it involves a lot of CRM between the front and the back and if you have a good crew you can really see the whole process come together. You also really get to use a helo as a helo and not a slow airplane that flies low and takes off vertically.

You should note that you haven't heard anyone extolling the virtues of night vertrep.

What Pags said. It's a lot of fun to fly.

Don't confuse VERTREP with externals, either - say, taking 70 loads of crap 2-6 miles to the beach. That's not much fun either.

^^ I wouldn't be surprised if that's the most publicized deployment short of Haiti.

A good story that goes with both of these Freedom VERTREP pictures ... that's cocaine on the pallets. Not only do you get to have fun getting the drug bust, but then you get to VERTREP the evidence afterward!

Does the Coast Guard usually blare a song on the 1MC at the end of each VERTREP evolution? (Navy ships do.) There's an old Clapton song...

They were surprisingly uncomfortable with VERTREP ... not like the CVN "you're coming in too hot and stop doing 180s" but more like "what the hell is going on ... why can't we just do small boat transfer." At one point during a pick (in the hover over the hook up man) the HCO started freaking out over tower freq about how close the tailwheel was to the flight deck.

I'm in a hover over a rolling flight deck ... really?
