Spouse DOD Job

My fiance is a teacher. We were both wondering how easy it is for teachers to transfer and move around with a DOD teaching job. In the first two years of SNA flight trainging, there's a decent amount of moving around. How would her teaching job (assuming she got it w/ the DOD) be affected? Anyone out there who knows a military spouse that teaches for the DOD?

A spouse in our squadron is a DoDDs teacher but she's been a DoDDs teacher for a while. It's hard to get in, but when you do she's found it easy to move around.

If she didn't have a DoDDs job her credential might transfer, there are other women on here who would know better than me.

The key is to keep your eyes open and be persistant, and apply apply apply because you never know what opportunity might come along.

Keep in mind, other than overseas, very few areas (no Navy that I can think of) have DoDDs schools.

No DOD schools around Pensacola but I remember hearing on the news that they were so desperate for Math/Science teachers that they were importing them from The Phillippines.

CONUS military run schools are part of the Department of Defense Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS). They are located predominantly on Army bases, with a few at Marine bases (all on the east coast, almost all in the south) and one at Dahlgren, VA. So unless you plan a career in the Army, I don't think DDESS schools are going to be an option for a spouse.

I believe they were originally set up so that soldiers and Marines did not have to deal with the segregated schools in the south. Rumsfeld tried to cut them a few years ago but there was an outcry from servicemembers and their families who use the schools.

Locations of DDESS schools:

The Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS) system serves military dependents overseas, including some US territories. Here are their locations in Europe:

And their Pacific locations:

If you get stationed overseas, which first tour in the Navy would mean CVW-5 in Japan, (Atsugi now, Iwakuni in a few years) then DoDDS might be a viable option for the fiance.

The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) is the agency that runs both the DDESS and DoDDS schools systems. Here is their website:

Here is some employment info:

And job postings on USAJOBS.gov, the official government job site:

Here are some Wikipedia links:

P.S. I did not know a lot about the schools but after just a few minutes of searching Google, I found all of the above info. Google is your friend......

i've been to those dodea websites and they're pretty helpful. i found, like you said, that most of the schools are in the south. we're looking for other options now. it doesn't look as if dodd schools are the best route unless we're overseas in Guam or Japan.
