I am a UAV dude. I like to refer to myself as a First Assignment Autonomous guy or "FAAG". I would do anything to get a manned cockpit. I love the naval aviation, I think the navy has it right.= I feel like that naval aviation might have been my calling. UAVs has been a good experience. I have learned more than I can possible imagine every day. Every day i go to work i fly a combat mission. I have a promising future and career ahead of me in the AF. However I did not join the AF in search of a good career. I joined to do some flying. Flying is my passion. The air force seems to be becoming a UAV force. I want some good old fashion fly. I really do not care about making rank or a career. I joined to pilot a manned aircraft. I was number 1 in my API class and made the commodore's list after primary with a 70 NSS. The transition from t-34s to t-38s was difficult. I had a hard time competing with the t-6 dudes who were at Vance. They knew the local area and procedures from t-6s. I was thrown into a JSUPT class in the middle of the program. I am a good pilot. I put a 100% in to what ever I do. The navy would benefit from my aviation experience. I really don't care if an inter-service transfer would hurt my career. I joined to fly. My heart would be 100% behind naval aviation. Again, I thank everyone for their contribution.

I'm a little unclear here, what happened exactly? You went T-38's and didn't make it through the program? Or you made it but was sent to UAV's?

I'm betting he made it through, but was sent UAVs. The Air Force has been doing that to guys more and more over the last few years as the demand for UAV coverage in theater as increased.

Tailspin, contact some of the Navy detailers in PERS-43 on the link I posted. It can't hurt to try. You have two limitations: 1) the Navy is slowing flight school some and 2) the AF might not give you up with so much time left on your commitment.

Good luck.

It is not all flying in the Navy either. After you get your wings and get through the FRS, you do your first sea (flying) tour. After that is a shore tour which may or may not include flying (i.e. staff, ROTC, instructor, weapons school). Then there is usually a dis-associated sea tour which means no flying on ship's company or staff. After that, you can expect a department head tour flying, back to a staff, and maybe CO/XO if you make the cut.

Basically, you are a Naval Officer first, aviator second. I flew for 13 of my 20 years but that is unusual since I transiitoned as a JO and missed doing a disassociated sea tour. I know guys who made it to CO/XO with only two operational flying tours (about 5 years).

If you just want to fly, call United.

I see your point about being a naval officer first. I can't argue with that. I think the overarching point is that he wants to at least fly something during his flying tours of duty not "operate" a drone from a box. The Navy while having no such part of its name using Air like the Air Force will ironically afford you that chance today be it a helo or a jet without the fear or threat of a drone in your future in a way the Air Force will not.

We have at least one pred guy now who managed to escape,...
#2 is on the way.
And, although not fast, the jet will embarrass you slowly. I'd bet it's the fastest slow jet in the USAF. :icon_wink

thanks for replying to my post. I would love to fly the U-2. I am straight out of 38s I know i have good hands. I would love to fly the u-2. Please let me know if there is any shred of hope for me at least getting a "try out" for the u2 with my background. Despite my limited experience.

Thanks!

who else thinks Talespin is a troll?

CM - Sometimes it's tough to tell the difference between Lts and trolls. Both tend to sound like they're drunk posting.

Talespin - I handfed you the link to the U-2 info. The prereqs are on there, as is a number you can call to see if you qualify and are a good fit for the program. Run with it.

A girl I went to HS with married an AF pilot. He made it through T-38s and selected A-10s, but then due to issues with the A-10 fleet was offered a UAV spot.

"Sticks and Stones..." I love those of you who make a judge of a persons character after reading only 2 posts. If you must know I needed to make some quick posts to be allowed to send a personal message to huggyu2. You can only message when you have multiple posts under your profile. I just want to fly.
