Returning From Deployment - Treveling on Commercial Air With Individual Weapons

I don't think it's unusual. If a unit is going en-masse, they generally have a chartered flight and carry their weapons on board the plane. If they're going as individuals, they may (or may not) bring their weapons with them. I see it all the time at BWI (Please note - much bigger airport than PNS).

I will add that as the 'clerk' in Djibouti that handled most redeployments....

I sent MANY an AF person home via commercial air from Djibouti to the states. And yes it seemed like many of them had their weapons. The only requirements were orders and a letter giving permission to carry said weapon.

However the only foreign airline that we allowed it on was Air France, all the rest were US airlines.

And I can only recall 1 Army Maj that redeployed with weapon.

But I believe that the other branches just have other ways of traveling or at least transporting the weapons. Most AF went home solo on Com Air while everyone else was practically shipped like cargo..

Just my observation...

Standard business for the AF. CE guys from my base deploying to Durkadurkastan flew commercial with me to Chicago and VA Beach with M-16s in cases as checked baggage. My orders authorized me to take an M-9 but it wasn't useful for anything besides an accountability headache where I was going.

Apparently the Afghan National AF is receiving a boat load of new MI-17's and they are being taught by USAF how to maintain them...

Hope that clears up what I know.

Interestingly, they're also receiving support from Navy guys flying -17's as well. I ran into a HSC guy who was off to Poland (I think it was) to learn the aircraft and then on to the 'Stan to teach. Not sure why they sent him there and not to Hurlburt. Probably would have made too much sense.

another anecdotal story:

my dad is Ohio ANG, he flew commercial from Columbus to Norfolk with the M9 checked. From there he caught military charters to the sandbox.

That's how I roll frequently. Civ to an airbase then .mil to the land of sand.

I don't get the question ... you always stow your firearms in the belly on CONUS commercial flights. Military or civilian personnel -- it doesn't matter. UNLESS you're a FED of some sort of an FFDO ... :)

CRAF flights ... ??? Everyone carried their own personal weapon(s) upstairs in the "big" cabin. What a beautiful concept. :)
