LtCol Jerry Coleman spent more than 70 years in pro baseball, a career that included four World Series titles with the New York Yankees. His baseball career was interrupted by World War II and the Korean War, when he served as a Marine Corps pilot. He flew 120 missions combined in the two wars. The ONLY Major League Baseball Player to have done so. His legacy lives on today within both the San Diego Padres, and the "Death Rattlers" of VMFA-323, the squadron in which he flew Corsairs in Korea.
"Oh, Doctor! You can hang a star on THAT one!"

The San Diego Air & Space Museum's F4U-7 Corsair bears his name and the markings of "Willy Sugar EIGHT"…one of the aircraft he flew with the Death Rattlers.
