PRK before joining?

I am considering either joining nrotc at my college or finishing up school and enlisting and going to ocs... anyways... I want to become a pilot. Can I get PRK surgery before I join up and get a waiver? I heard somewhere that eye surgery is not waiverable unless its done while in the NAVY... is this true?

Just a word of advice, you're not enlisting in the Navy, you are applying to an OFFICER program. Don't know about PRK, so can't help you there. Good luck!

I'm doing Marine Corps OCS, and I had to have PRK completed before my application package was sent into the board. I believe to get an air contract you must already have the waiver and everything. I'm sure the Navy is the same way. Best way to find out is to talk to your OSO.

Don't know the details, but no, that's not true (you can - and probably should - get it done before you join).

This might help: http://www.airwarriors.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7428

Best bet though is to talk to a recruiter (or the NROTC unit, if you are going that route). They should have the latest updates. Besure to check up on the regs as much as you can, as the only person that can be hurt is you.

This one isn't bad either: http://www.airwarriors.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6477

You can have PRK before you apply and enter the Navy. The surgery is waiverable as long as there are no serious complications or unwanted lingering effects (halos, sunbursts, etc). Depending on your eyes, you will have to wait at least 3-6 months after the surgery before you can submit your application. I know because I just had PRK done a little over a month ago and am just waiting to have my eyes checked again at the 3 month mark. Check out this link for the actual regulations:

nugget81 is correct. The link he provided is pretty much all you need to know. As far as your recruiter is concerned, if you haven't signed anything, he doesn't have anything to do with the approval process (actually, there is no approval process if you aren't in the military). It's probably good to let him know, but all you need to do is keep all you pre-op and post-op records and follow the guidelines on that link. When you go in for your physical, they will begin the waiver process.

I would also wait until you are 6-7 months from applying. Lasers and their software are like any other computer; the day after you have the surgery done, there's something better on the market.

Yes you can have the surgery done before joining. I don't know about NROTC, but OCS candidates must wait 3 months after the surgery to apply for the waiver, have no complications, and provide all your medical records for the process. good luck.
