Pilot vs NFO (Navy/Marine Corps)

If you're aircraft is retired, wouldn't be an easy switch to transition to pilot as you'd just have to complete intermediate and advanced?
You’d basically start from scratch, just like a brand new student. They did offer some pilot transitions to the prowler ECMO’s but not as a community-wide thing. Some others switched to be WSO’s but that won’t be an option when the hornets go away.

A couple (or more) thoughts on that:

1. Not easy nor always an option; and it is competitive so don't count on it

2. Some NFO to Pilot transitions produce superb aviators; some...not so much

3. Depending on timing, going back to Training Command results in a lot of not observed FITREP time vs your peers and then you show up in a squadron fairly senior but basically a Nugget pilot putting you behind your peers competitively until you gain experience.

You really don’t want to voluntarily join a transitioning/dying community. There’s lots of politics and it’s not straightforward. If you have the choice do something else.
Gotcha, also where would Marine NFOs be stationed? Where do they typically go?

Once VMFA (AW)-242 (Japan) transitions to the JSF at the end of the year, the only two D Hornet Squadrons left would be VMFA (AW)-224 and 533. But they are both supposed to transition to the JSF around 2025.

They are both at MCAS Beaufort, SC

I'm not sure what's inspiring you bud but if you can read the writings on the wall here.... don't do it

In the last 15 years plenty of pilots got screwed out of their careers when planes like the F-14, S-3, Phrog.... etc got retired.
