Odds are, your bird may still be in service. Our NEWEST bird came into service in 1969!

Back when I was teaching sailing at the marina on NS Norfolk I had a buddy in HMM-774 who loved to tell us that the last helo off the embassy in Saigon was still flying in his squadron. If memory serves me correct they recently retired her. I'm sure there is an article in one of these forums about it.

True. The Wild Goose Chase of -774 flew her to the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum (Miramar) in 2004. HMM-165, who owned the bird that Gerry Berry flew on 30 Apr 75, "jacked" the bird last year and their Airframes division (the greatest Airframes division in the Marine Corps, if I might add) restored her to her 1975 glory.

My grandpa was SgtMaj of HMM-161 in daNang, Viet Nam back in 1968. He actually served as a crewchief, although a grunt by trade, and though his aircraft were shot down 3 times (once with the Squadron CO) that beautiful bird allowed him to make it home! I still have his flight jacket with the original 161 patch. Long live the battlephrog.
