I think the biggest problem for the airline industry is that the business models most of these airlines have are failures....The 'legacy' carriers in this country have failed REPEATEDLY. Our tax dollars have been used time and time again to bail them out....

Not true; just a short list of 'legacies' and 'regionals' for you to sample:

Ever heard of ???? .... Braniff ... Eastern ... PanAm ... Western ... Continental (1) ... TWA ... Hughes ... Southern ... Republic ... Frontier
(1) ... AirCal ... PSA ... TexasAir ... National ... Allegheny ... Piedmont ... Midway ... World ... TransAmerica ... People Express ... NYAir ... the list goes on ... and on ... and on ... 1000's of pilots lost their jobs. Many never flew again ...

A taxpayer 'bailout' is a relatively recent thing. Kinder, gentler and all ... bubble-wrap from cradle to grave society -- the NEW AMERICA.

So while we ended up with is a quasi-'deregulation' in domestic routes and fares, everything else in the industry is regulated, recorded, and checked by 'da MAN.

Exactly.... while they 'deregulated' the ticket fares, they didn't 'deregulate' the costs of having to comply with 121
