Motorcycle Security at TBS

I received word the other day that I will be attending OCC-196 on an air contract; and while I'm not trying to get ahead of myself by posting questions about TBS prior to even attending OCC, I had a question I hope some of you with experience could lend some thoughts to.

Background: I've accumulated a nice chunk of student loans while getting my B.S. and M.A. (graduating Aug07), probably somewhere on the order of $25-28k. As a result I've been entertaining the idea of purchasing an older (02-04) Yamaha R6 and selling my 1999 Corvette with the intention of getting out of the red and into the black sooner, rather than later.

Question: As I've been reading about transportation at TBS (provided I make it to that point), and how it is almost mandatory, I was wondering how secure a motorcycle would be when parked. In other words, would it be unwise to bring a motorcycle to TBS?

Plenty of guys had bikes when I went through, just know that its going to suck sometimes not having a car, especially if you end up in a winter company, your bike will just sit because of the weather. My advice, get a POS civic or something of the like, use it, abuse it, save up some money while at TBS pay off the loans, and worry about a bike after flight school...of all the guys I know that had/have bikes, most either only rode them to TBS a few days of the week and had cars (IE were Geo batchelors), or left their bikes at home. Now as for security, dont know dont have a bike but why wouldn't you put a lock on brake a chain on the rim just in case, its takes 30 seconds and buys piece of mind....my .02

There were always about 5-10 bikes parked outside the barracks when I was going through. I would feel very certain that your bike would be fine there. However, as it was said above, you are going to want a car/truck.

Thanks for the quick responses Cavt and devil_dog.

So primarily because of the weather? Is it routine that you need a car/truck and the extra space that is provided to move gear and such?

Its always nice to have that car to throw the extra stuff that doesn't fit in your room or a place to put things when you are doing one of your 5+ room moves. Weather would be a big factor, its gonna be pretty cold (and wet) and I know I dont enjoy riding in that ... you would probably be bumming a lot of rides, but being the guy who buys drinks for that buddy could take care of that issue real fast. :D Personally I would leave the bike at home, take 6 months off from riding and bring the car dude.

There was a buddy of mine who didnt have a car or a bike, and he did just fine, just had to figure out when people were going to the Scholarship and into town and what not to get all the random crud you are going to have to buy while in TBS, and just to get the hell of of Camp Barrett...

And a lot of trips to Qtown, as well as Dicks/Gander Mt. sporting goods over in Freds. Almost every week we were out purchasing shhhtuff for TBS...that or purchasing replacements for inspections etc. etc. Everyone is neck deep in student loans, my school alone is 80k (Art Institute), plus my husbands 25k, plus a 45k flood we endured (long story), I'd get a car...makes more sense. Of course your fire team might end up picking up your slack if you get a bike... :D Good luck, when you get here.

OMG....now, THAT is a scam school..I think they teach color-by-number. That's the school where you print off your own certificate..and if you throw in an extra 19.99+s/h you get free set of ginzu knives. :)

ok, so here's the rub. I have a '04 Harley Davidson Softail Deuce that i blew 16k on. should i have brought it, probably. is there adequate parking? yes. just be sure to tie that mofo down, bc about a month ago, a badass storm laid it's hand upon Camp Barrett and blew over a lot of bikes. also, if you have not taken a Motorcycle Saftey Course, standby...bc you will have to demonstrate your proficiency. My advice would be to pick up a $200 1983 Honda Civic, cut the mufflers off and paint flames on it...then drive that mofo into the ground while your here....but that's just coming from a guy who's paying $435 a month for a bike he left in Memphis, TN..to answer your ? though, nobody is going to jack your bike. /rant

I have taken the MSF Course and have previous riding experience. I was only planning on spending around $4,000 on a used R6; the money I'd pocket from selling my car. I guess I've got a few things to think about in the six months before leaving for OCC. Thanks for the response.

I'm definitely making some great art...I posted some military artwork on one of the forums- I don't have any computer graphics posted for the marine corps...I have others, but it doesn't fit the military theme unfortunately. I do side jobs for bussiness/logos. I turned down a graphic design job for the Air Force...because we were moving. I just finished www.fiscalfitnessmadison.com and in Japan :icon_smil I'll be starting up my t-shirt business so be on the lookout.

Oh, and my husband is with Alpha...he just finished FEX IV- so now, we're just counting down the days til graduation. :party_125

Hogans alley sounded really interesting...I think I would have loved to be part of it. :)
