Reminds me of a story about the German Air Force…
During a month-long deployment to Jever Air Base in northern Germany, we were debriefing with a German Tornado crew after a training mission. While watching their video tape recording of their IP to target run, we noticed that they were speaking in English to each other. We had to ask them why.
“Manfred and Werner, we understand that you’d speak English on the radio, as you have to do so every day in Germany talking to ATC. But why do you speak English to each other inside the cockpit?”
“John,” Manfred replied, “Do you know what the word is in German for ‘Pitch Out’?”
“No”
“Die Kurve das Man mache anvor die finale Kurve für die Geschwindikeit weniger gemachen,” he answered. “The turn that one makes before the final turn in order to reduce speed before landing, That’s why we speak English!”
