I just recently got to deal with the military health care. My boyfriend, who just graduated from OCS on April 11, ended up getting pink eye while he was visiting me. I live near a base, but the hospital was closed, so I had to take him to the local hospital. He didn't have to pay a dime at the emergency room or for his prescription. We weren't sure if his health plan was in place because they don't go through it with them during OCS. Apparently it was in place. Now I am not sure if he will get billed eventually or anything, but I was pretty impressed with the whole experience. I also read in a book I have about being a military wife, that any facility that honors medicare has to honor tricare. I am not sure if that helps anyone out, but I thought it was good to know.

Anyone on active duty is automatically enrolled in Tricare, although I'm sure they won't just go over it unless you ask. He shouldn't have to pay anything...maybe just a small copay, if that much. I have the book Navy Spouses Guide by Laura Stavridis. Is that the book you're talking about, Rebecca? I highly recommend it to any significant other starting Navy life.

I've been dealing with TriCare for severals years now and I think TriCare Prime is the best option. There are NO copays and if you are not close to a Navy medical clinic then you are assigned a PCM. This will be the person who gets your referrals for you to see a specialist which your wife will need being a diabetic. You can see your PCM ( primary care manager ) whenever you need, without referrals. Also, if you get your prescriptions filled at a Military pharmacy, they are free. Good luck to you both!!

Thanks for all the good information everybody! Looks like we will be better of going to the justice of the peace first and then doing the ceremony!! Thanks

I believe that my book is different. It is for all branches of the military. I can't remember the name of it right now. It has been pretty helpful in giving my an idea of what to expect. So your book is for Navy spouses, sounds like I should check it out! Does it go into more detail of what to expect and what not?

I think that it's very informative. I need to go back through it now that I'm actually a Navy spouse now, but I think it helped me know situations to expect and tips for moving, parties, etc.

Goose,
Congradulations on the upcoming wedding. My wife and I were married last month for the very same reason. Our cerimony will be next summer after OCS. Talk to your local recruter. There should be someone on staff there that has all of the handouts and any information that you need.
