So in 99, I'm on my first WESTPAC with the Connie and we have mids. We launch on a SSC (yeah, COD's did SSC which meant burn gas, kill time for the airborne respot) and had a mid sit between us pilots on an ammo box or something. We are at 500' doing that clover leaf manuever around a ship and all of a sudden, I smell shrimp. Now the mid was borrowing the aircraft commanders headset and started puking. However, he failed to move the boom mike out of the way and a pile of vomited shrip had stacked up on the boom mike lol. It smelled horrible!! I think Duff (the AC) gave him that headset. I would have just burned it.

In '02 we had a Mid go UA in a Med port. It used to be you could more or less disappear in a some ports for a few days as long as you were back in time for your duty day, but 9/11 changed a lot of that. (1) The Mid and a non-rated JG (2) from the ship's company thought the two-day MWR tour to Athens (3) (4) seemed pretty neat so off they went. At their hotel in Athens they couldn't figure out how to phone the ship (5), but figured they'd sort it out the next day. Soon the chain of command had some tapdancing to do for the morning muster report (6)...

... and a few days later there was a Captain's Mast x2.

(1) this was less than a year after 9/11 and things were just a liiiiiitle uptight
(2) not a bad choice for overnight liberty buddy per se, but this particular individual was not exactly promising leadership material
(3) the tour was only for people actually stationed in Souda Bay, not ships making portcalls
(4) the liberty boundaries expressly did not include flights to Athens or anyplace not on the island of Crete
(5) for overnight liberty in a foreign port you normally call the ship with your whereabouts and contact info in the early evening
(6) which is a really really big deal- seriously

I wonder how you get that little award, more backstabbings than any other SWO? ;)
