From an email that went out across the Navy intel community this week; I just wish I could see all the submissions....:

Subject: INTEL qualification Pin

All,

The DNI is in the genesis of moving the "PQP" program to a PQS program
in order to facilitate one of the requirements for an Intel
qualification pin. Hence, we are soliciting your thoughts and inputs on
what the proposed design might look like. A few of the DNI's
thoughts/criteria:

* It can't be ugly
* Must be horizontal...similar to SWO pin orientation
* Should reflect power and knowledge

This will happen! I need your inputs e-mailed to me NLT 08 AUG

We are going to wear this folks...so lets make it look great!

If you gotta problem, yo, I'll be part of it.

Well, there goes the thumb rule that if someone is wearing a warfare pin they should know what they're talking about.

(no smilies. simulated or otherwise.)

I choose to laugh.....

maybe the pin should be a laptop with a couple of mice going either way. I think that would reflect the "Information Dominance" that the new DNI is looking for.

+1....I vote for a cloak and dagger design.

These would make pretty cool golden pins for 1630 weiners....

As an uninformed civilian (until next week, at least, at which point I'll just be uninformed)...

Why shouldn't the intel community have a pin? SWOs, aviation, supply, etc. all seem to have insignia.

Just wondering, and yes I realize this is probably a retarded question since you all really seem to think the idea is gay :)

WOG are cool and all, but what is the big deal? Every designator has to earn a pin now? I thought only women were easily distracted by, and obsessed with shiny objects?

Because this is just the outgrowth of the "Self Esteem Culture".

You know, the "If everyone is special, nobody is" crowd.

Aviators (to include Aircrew and NFOs) and Submariners initially got pins to distinguish they did something outside the norm for the Naval profession, and often at great personal peril.

Now, they want to make it if you as much as finish a PQS, you get a "pin" equal to wings.

Supply wings or other "bling pins" != NA/NFO/NAC wings or Dolphins

Now everybody wants something so the poor wittle (insert job here) does not get his feelings hurt.

Tough shit. Want something that looks like wings/dolphins/tridents? GO FUCKING EARN THEM..

What is that saying.. Choose your rate, choose your fate?

If I'm not mistaken, even the Submariners didn't have a pin until after WWII-ish. After all, they were the "Silent Service." SEALs didn't even get their pin until after Vietnam.

Regardless, I agree it's silly.

WTF?!

As a proud wearer of silver dolphins, and one who will join the training pipeline in Oct to EARN Naval Aviator wings, I'm appalled.....

We might as well start handing out "bling" to each recruit as he/she shows up to their first ship/command/crew and to each brand new butter bar as he/she receives their designator...

PQS are not equal to warfare quals. PQS are in-rate specific or general minimums for different quals. They DO NOT mean you are a recognized "specialist" in the United States Navy.

IMO

It's gettin' a bit dramatic 'round here...

Have you seen SWMDOC pins that Navy doc's "earn" on a CVN? Like EAWS but they get a gold insignia.
