H.R. 45 - 2009 Antigun legislation

God forbid that someone would require people to have a license to own a gun or require people to take a competency test to ensure they have the mental capacity to use and operate said gun, or have the wherewithal to keep their guns out of the hands of criminals or youths!Just look at that 11 year old boy that shot and killed his soon-to-be step mother and unborn brother! How was the boy able to get a shot gun full of ammo? And that 9-year-old that shot his father and some other man, in the father’s own home… how did the boy get a hold of a handgun?Isn’t one of the purposes of government is to set rules to protect its citizens? So riddle me this Batman, where was the rules that were supposed to protect the 4 aforementioned, now dead, citizens?

NC and 18 other states already have laws on the books requiring that firearms be stored unloaded and under lock and key if there are minors in the house. Turns out it's hard to enforce the law unless something bad happens. Kinda like trying to keep the occasional gangbanger from murdering a rival. There are laws against that too. Now what??

In general I am against anti-gun legislation however of all the anti-gun legislation this seems to be on the more reasonable side. At least it does regulate misnomers like cop-killer bullets or the completely misunderstood (by the anti-gun lobby) term "assault rifle". I mean it's not completely unreasonable to require people to know how to use a gun before using one...kinda like how we have to have a drivers license to operate a motor vehicle. The problem comes if they turn the test into some impossible non-passable test that makes the bill an defacto gun-ban

The problem with this legislation is that it makes people have to submit an application for a right thats given by the constitution. How long till a license is required for freedom of speech so we can make sure that the only people exercising that right wont "hurt our feelings".

The fact is that under the second amendment there is no "unless they don't pass a license test" clause

on a lighter note,

on the highly unlikely event that this legislation passes, do you want to be stuck in a DMV type setting with a whole bunch of other gun owners

(that was meant to be a joke)

Nope, don't like it, sorry. Although if they ever did get to pass a law banning firearms entirely to the general public (and don't delude yourself into thinking thats not on the agenda for the long term), it would be a great way to know exactly where to look for firearms.

1) Check list
2) Perform raids on houses listed
3) Unarmed citizens = no crime, right?
4) I might be missing a few.... but I think Apocalypse is close to here.

I know I'm being dramatic, but gun laws should only be in effect to keep guns out of the hands of minors and criminals. But, guess what: criminals are going to get guns however they can... and minors will be able to get them if the people who own the gun aren't responsible enough to store it properly.

Why should an entire populace be punished for people who are going to break the gun laws anyways or people who weren't responsible enough to store their guns properly?

And how did those gang bangers get those guns? Answer: lax gun control laws… their not making them in the basement, their too stupid! They are buying them from the arms dealers who are selling guns to every Tom, Dick, and Harry with a wad of cash with little oversight concerning the transfer and issue of arms. Irrespective to how one interprets the 2nd Amendment, EVERYBODY should not be in possession of a gun.

If these arms dealers are not obeying the current laws, then nothing is going to stop them from not obeying the new ones. This legislation will have no effect on violent crime, except y'know, make it safer for the criminals.

Drunk Driving is against the law, but for some strange reason licensed people manage to kill people in this way all the time.. It's weird, there's a law against it, it shouldn't be happening... so frustrating these clever criminal types..

And the right way to fix that is to throw the book at the dealers and send them away for a long time for selling to a known felon---NOT to start banning firearms and types of ammunition, or restricting their sale. Punish the offender, not the rest of us.

EXACTLY,

What needs to happen is better enforcement of current laws rather than adding more.

Well said

And you would need tank armor piercing weapons and ammo for what reason? We can agree that society has the right to constrain individual freedom when it reasonably threatens to do harm to others. The First Amendment doesn’t give you the right to yell “fire” in a crowded theater; your right to practice your religion does not encompass human sacrifice.

Bad argument, there are already laws that protect against those kind of actions (Criminal negligence, Murder).

Those same laws are applied to guns.

And Im not really sure If I can go down to the local gun shop and buy tank piercing ammo.

Also the key word (or words here) is INDIVIDUAL FREEDOM, and guess what, we already have a system for that in place, it's called Jail. And those who have been to jail for a felony or a violent crime find it very difficult to purchase a gun legally.

What this bill proposes is the infringement on EVERYONE'S freedom.
