I could be wrong, but I think if you take the separation pay and eventually retire out of the Reserves, they make you pay it back.

First I have heard of that... I don't think the goverment is that smart.. Also would be hard to track it cause I know lots of Marines that went into the Navy Reserve and they have a hard time just figuring out their service records for boards and such.. Can't imagine the beancounters would be any better?

And I entirely agree with Jarhead... And all I can say is that I wish, I would have been passed over and got the cash... So good on them for monopolizing a loophole... ;)

They do. I asked about that specifically and the practice right now is to take 75% of your retired pay until it is paid off. They do not add interest to it though and so seperation pay it is basically an interest free loan (for about 25-30 years) if you do end up retiring from the reserves. This is straight from the lady who deals with this at BUPERS, and not second hand.

You really think the government would not remember that you owe it money?! Now if they owe you money that might be different, but with the huge paper trail that is left behind with eveything you do in the military, and switching services is pretty common for active duty to reserve transitions. I would be shocked if you don't get a much smaller reserve paycheck because you took sep pay and had to pay it back.

agreed ... dudes who take the bonus are staying in anyways, whether the bonus was there or not.

but a bigger joke than the bonus system IMO is involuntary separation pay ... dudes who know they are getting out of the Corps, gaming the system to get double P'd thus forced out, and then receiving the $60k or more for getting "involuntary" separated .

Oh it gets better. Don't forget about the Capt. Reserve Bonus. Here's how to get it.

Fitrep date gaps: make sure you have a few, but keep the originals so that you can submit them after your second pass.

PME: Do phase I but dont' submit it. There are tons of sites out there that have the answers to every test booklet, or you can get the review slides from any seminar class instructor as they teach the test anyway. Don't do Phase II, you can do that at home for a week and get paid $380 a day to do it.

Photo: Don't submit it, but have one ready to go for your reserve package promotion. If your CO is a company man and makes you take your picture then just do it with your wings on and no ribbons, the grunt officers on the boards hate that more than anything. Also grow out a big det mustache and some burns. I sort of look like a 70's porn star in mine. Nothing says pass me over like someone who looks like porn star.

Awards: Don't let any awards get into the system that may have occured while you had date gaps, that will get them to send you an email or worse yet call you. Instead hold onto them for your reserve board.

Now from friends who have already done this, I've been told that the minute you get the letter that says, "So long thanks for playing." You submmit all of the paperwork you've been sitting on. I've also been told to make sure you pull your OMPF to make sure it's all in there. You don't want any hang ups for the Reserve Board.

The most important thing to do though is not check the "I want a reserve commission box." If you do this, you can be auto joined to a unit. They KEY is to get your funding data number so that when you come back to the reserves you can submit your package with that number so you get your bonus for entering the Reserves as a Captain. Yes, that's right, not only do you get your seperation money, but you get a bonus for entering into the reserves as a Captain, and once the board meets for the reserves you get promoted to Major too. The Captain bonus for the reserves is 10k right now and could go higher.

While your buds are eating exhaust in the beltway driving 2 hours a day to get to EWS class you can sit back in your log cabin in Maine eating Lobster and laugh all the way to the bank.:D

Now, there are a few masters at this who I've heard that have taken the short bonus for two years, been passed twice got the seps money, and took a bonus to enter the reserves, but that's just too risky for me. If you know anyone who has pulled that off, my hat is off to them.

I do know one guy who did all that, then 2 years later took a bonus to come back active duty to fly, but that was back in the 90's. Not sure if they'll let that happen again.

I think with any government agency, you get what you pay for... Some lazy, fairly clueless GS employee on a smoke/coffee break... Look at Haliburton, 911 charities, etc.. The accountants can't account for jack... So yes, I do think they are not that smart... I use to drill at Bupers, here at Millington and you wouldn't believe some of the disorganization... We had some big time professional managers, clerks, etc in the civilian world mobilized and when they would bring up a better way, they were nearly always told "NO, we have a always done it this way."

Thanks so much for your dedicated service to your country. You must be a joy to work with. All this discontent with being in the service...I didn't know there was a draft...

On a slightly different note, I wonder if the large delta between the single and double anchor bonus numbers for the USMC are a sign that they're now shaping their manpower for the eventual elimination of all Marine NFOs, as has been previously discussed on AW. I don't know what the historical numbers have been for USMC bonuses, but as more time passes, it's looking more and more like the Marines will be going towards an all Pilot aircrew force. From the Prowler side of the house, it's looking like a USMC only Prowler fleet is going to be prohibitively expensive and painful to operate, so I think they may completely dump that program shortly after the Navy does.

blah blah blah ...
Thanks for the gouge, but having 3 years left on my commitment and then 4 more years after that to retire (prior enlisted), I'm in the "taking the bonus" category. Plus, I’m not bitter, and for the most part have enjoyed my time in the Corps.

For those of you brainwashed youngens out there who believe “Marine Officer first, pilot second” and all that moto trash, read 3P4Life’s post closely for a reality check. Don’t hate though, he’s just exploiting a jacked up system.

Has there been any talk of the Marines getting the G to replace their prowler fleet?

The idea has been bandied about, but not in any official/procurement way. Conventional wisdom is that it will be too expensive and the Marines' need for an organic EA platform does not justify the cost. They've also talked about making an EA version of the F-35 - also a very expensive proposition.

So for the Navy ACP, does it vary from year to year like the USMC, or is it a flat 25k for pilots/15k NFO? Anyone know?
