Yeah, but why buy something new and sexy just to have it rot, get all salty and have seagulls drop shells on it all day? I waited after OCS and was glad I did so seeing other cars damaged. It was the same for a computer. Buy a nice computer, have it sit for months. I think it is a waste.

His advice is very good. Lots of cars (mine included) got pretty wrecked from the salt/ice/snow/ocean spray on it for 3 months. Don't bring a car, or bring the cheapest thing you can get to, and away from, RI safely with.

Wouldn't a car cover prevent most of that?

Some hot chicks turn into fat lazy nasty things...but they're still worth the ride when you can get them. :D

Car covers sometimes blow back (and sometimes scratch your car) and you won't notice it for a week or two sometimes. But overall, unless it's needed I wouldn't risk taking on that kind of debt till you're an O-1. I don't want to sound overly salty or negative for that matter, but getting to OCS doesn't mean you'll get through OCS. Sh!t happens, sometimes it's out of your control.

Yeah, well. The Dude abides.
Right-o...I appreciate the advice. I'm planning on keeping the car in my parents garage in Medina (suburb of Cleveland). I think buying soon is a good idea just because I can get a very good deal versus two years from now. Anyways, thanks all for the input, I really appreciate it!!!

Yeah, 2 things with this.

1) Cars that sit aren't good for the longevity

2) Wait until the end of the month, end of the week, end of the day, end of the hr, end of anything you can, to make your offer. The last minute for signing the paperwork is the best. This will also allow you more time to analyze your financial situation.

In fact, if I were a betting man...which I am...I would imagine the best time THIS year to buy a car, (I think that there will be a "buyers market" well into this year...) would be 25-27SEP (this is the end of the week, end of the month, end of the last fiscal 1/4) around 8-9PM that night. Make your offer then.

...(suburb of Cleveland)...

Make the trip up to Detroit if you can. Cars there are several thousand bucks cheaper than Cleveland/Akron area. Worth the trip in gas. Apparently they're hurting bad there to sell cars. My dad traveled up there a month ago with my uncle to go to a casino and somehow ended up looking at cars because they were so cheap

This is fantastic advice if someone's never negotiated a car before. I put an offer down on a car on the 30th of January and did the old fake get up and start to leave thing a few times which ended up saving me thousands.

A couple people I knew who had car covers always had them blown off. As for shit happening, getting kicked out of the Navy would be much worse with the addition of an expensive car loan.

I'm enlisted, but I was able to save up quite a chunk of change while in Hawaii, and especially while on deployment, so I was able to put a substantial down on a 2009 Mustang GT and finance $22k of it with Navy Federal. However, because of my poor credit (a family member's bankruptcy hit my credit hard when I was in high school because they had a card in my name and I didn't even know about it until now), Navy Federal was one of the only options to finance it. It was a pretty bad rate, but with good/decent/no credit, I imagine you could get a better rate with other banks or credit unions.

uhh fraud? What happened after that? I hope you beat some major ass for that one. Also, wouldn't the bankruptcy fallout be cleared up if you showed that it happened without your authorization?

Well I found out about it a month ago, and there is no reason to do much about it because it will fall off the report when it reaches 7 years old in a few months. It wasn't entirely fraud because I did sign paperwork, but I didn't have the full wherewithall to care about it or pay attention to what it would be used for at the time.

Anywho, with bad credit, Navy Federal screws you, but it was one of my only options. I plan to refinance once that blemish falls off the reports.
