Does taking ROTC orders kill chance for O4 or selection for redes?

If an NFO were to take ROTC orders for their shore tour...does that kill chances for selection to O4, or just for DH selection?

Also, let's assume that same individual decides they want to redes after their shore tour...would the ROTC orders hurt their chances of getting picked up for redes? If they redes into something like HR or PAO, will the ROTC tour kill O4 selection in those communities?

If making O-4 and moving up are your goals, an ROTC instructor tour is not the way in our current environment. I think a recent HSL-49 CO had an ROTC tour in his biography, but that would have been over 10 years ago that he took the orders. When I was in the FRS ('09) I met two P-DHs with ROTC shore tours in their past. As a current ROTC instructor (went to flight school 2 years late due to grad school) I was FOS for my IZ look this summer. On the positive side, I'll have a second master's under my belt from a legit school by the time I'm booted.

If you are not very confident that continuing along the golden path is in your future, ROTC is a great option to set yourself up for your next employer (and a rewarding gig in and of itself).

ROTC won't get you to O-4.

WRT to redesignation, the answer is a little more complicated and mostly dependent on timing and whether your community will let you go.

Take a look at the board quota letters at the link below:
http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/boards/administrative/TransferRedesignation/Pages/Status.aspx

Your profile says you're a VP bubba. Out-quotas for VP NFOs on the last redes board including one person from YGs '05, '06, and '07. That's three VP NFOs who got to transfer, total. There were additional quotas for 1xFOS for O-4, but you don't want that to be you.

The other thing to consider is that you can't go up for redesignation until you're within a year of the end of your MSR. For a VP NFO, you'll probably hit this gate before the end of your shore tour, so it won't be a problem. For pilots it's more of a factor.

To which community are you trying to go?

I'd like to go HR or PAO. I'll only have a couple years left before I hit my 20, and I'd prefer to have my final years NOT as a DH in a VP squadron. Hell, if I get HR or PAO, I'd stay longer than 20 if I could.

I'm not really sure how redesignation works with regards to my community letting me go. If I'm at the end of my commitment, and I want to redes, won't my community just allow me to transfer instead of forcing me to just get out?

Thanks to everyone for your replies!

I just told you how redes works with regards to the community letting you go. I'll try again: at the beginning of every board, a quota letter is released. That letter tells how many people from each community and year group will be allowed to lateral transfer. For example, at the June lateral transfer board, only one VP NFO from YG '07 was allowed to lateral transfer. For VP NFOs over the past couple of years, there has typically been a 2-3 year window for senior LTs where they've let one person go per YG per board. So there's at least a chance. Read the quota letters for the last few boards that I linked above--they are the best resource for understanding how the process works.

If you go ROTC, I wouldn't worry about spending your last couple of years as a VP DH...

Redesignating into FTS would probably be the best way to get to O-4 and beyond if you take the ROTC orders.

I can't speak for the process of switching into active duty HR/PAO/etc, but the process is fairly straightforward for getting in on the FTS side. The O-4 and O-5 selection rates are quite a bit higher than on the active side too. Clicky, the information on the how is on here. http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/officer/communitymanagers/reserve/fts/Pages/FTSRedesignationBoard.aspx

There are two caveats, if you are looking for shore orders now, you're still several years out until you can apply. The current timing rules are that you must be inside of two years of your winging comittment and 18 months from your prd. That could change when your timing comes in the window.

The second caveat, and this is just my opinion. With the O-4 board results that just posted and no visible changes coming in the next year or two, it is very likely that the FTS redes boards could quickly become much more competitive than past years because there are a lot of good dudes that were FOS'd once and probably don't want to get out.

To follow up on this older thread... is there a place to find ROTC billets available? Or any other non-production shore tours?

The detailers keep all those billets close hold. Good luck trying to get it out of them.

Yet somehow the Reserves can publish all the available billets to a website and have the individuals pick their own dreamsheet. Why does the AC play these reindeer games again?

It's all about control. When I and another DH at VT went up for orders, we both got different stories from the detailer. They act as a filter.

And your story proves the point behind my rhetorical question. :)
