Y’all can dump on a TACAN point to point all you want, but for those 6-9 month pleasure cruises, they’re all you’ve got. Pencil method FTW.
The god of TACAN point to points

The moving map changes everything. The T-6 point to points were mind blowing because you had to look at DME and the tail of the TACAN needle to find the cut. With a moving map, you just draw the course line through the TACAN, zoom out until you see it, and then aim at the part of the needle you want to intersect.

The two pics show the difference. One you're always looking at the displacement from the course line. The other you're just zooming out to look at the course line itself.

Wait. You actually used this in your career?

Yup. Relative SAR datums from Mom were always bearing/range. Quickest way to pull someone out of the drink was swag the turn direction to start and then refine with a PtP while copilot put in a Lat/Long, if it even existed.

edit: @Hammer10k can the hornet show the boat tacan on the map or is that only for ground stations?

The F18 does exactly what the picture on the right depicts. Can also do the same thing with a MIDS track file or target designation.

Yup, just like wlawr said. The whole system made it easy for the nervous CAT-1 to find the boat during CQ. Basically just had to zoom out on the moving map and drive to the corner of the working area where the boat was supposed to be, wait for the tacan symbol to appear, and then set up the course line for the initial. Even I couldn't mess it up.
