I am looking into career options and came across Blue 21. Does anyone have Blue 21 experience or info? I know there use to be a thread on here about it but I cant seem to find it. I have refferenced the CG website already, but I think my case is a little unique. I was told that I did not qualify for the program because my school did not meet the required % of diversity in the student body. My question is, how can the aviation community be diversified based on the % of minorities in your school?? I would honestly like to take advantage of the opportunity, but I am a bit confused. The recruiter did not seem to have much info to go by, does anyone know a way I can contact the program reps directly? I know this may be a sensitive issue, but any info will be appriciated

Ditto here, I didn't qual due to ratio. Tried to do some question asking of the coastie recruiter but all he could tell me was 'submit a package... call me your senior year.' Don't think Daytona USCG Rec. is about ERAU kids.

So called my home-based recruiter in DC. Real helpful guy. Said the 25% minority is hard and fast as a rule... actually eliminates quite a few expensive schools (ERAU) from the list... this was back when I was looking into CSPI, which I think had the same requirements. Bottom line, for me anyway, was why spend $22k/year to send one kid to riddle when they could spend the same amount on 3 or 4 kids at a state school. That's the impression that I was given anyway.

Basically... if I want to join it's OCS all the way, no cheap money attached. Still not sure whether I will or not.

Program Heads were up in Jax a year ago... seemed that no recruiters had any idea what I was talking about when I asked about it initially... after a year they started figuring it out, and directed me to (I think her) number. Ask your rec. for the number of the guy/girl in Jax. Might help.

Thanks for the response. My situation is a little bit unique. I am not a resident student, I am enrolled in the distance learning program out of PA. I am an active duty Marine Sgt, Aviation Ops Specialist and aircrew aboard CH-53E. I will have my ppl in a few weeks and entering my last year of school. I know this is a sensitive issue! The objective of the program is to diversify the aviation community in the CG, right?! Doesnt this mean hiring minorities? I'm not looking for a free ticket, but if the program exists why not take advantage of it. In addition to being very qualified and capable, I am also hispanic, thus contributing to the goal of the program. Unfortunately, ERAU does not meet the 25%, therefore I am not qualified. I called the recruiting command to get the answer I want. The recruiter was lost and couldnt give me any good gauge.

Due to the government,I feel over-stimulated.
You're right USMCBill...

It doesn't matter what YOU are, it matters what the makeup of your SCHOOL is. It is illegal for USCG to say, "This year we will recruit/accept/save X number of pilot slots for minorities." It just can't be done. So they recruit from minority-heavy schools in hopes of increasing the chances of finding a qualified candidate who also happens to be from a minority segment.
When I explained it to a friend of mine in NYC, he said the same thing as you, "So I can't apply because of where I got my degree? But I'm BLACK!?!"
I wrote to every Congressman and Senator in every state I had a family member in about the program and how it was "geographic" recruiting (for people from the South and urban areas only, please) and not really fair. I got zero response.
Now, I'm playing the game and getting an aviation mgmt. degree online from a small college in FL so I can apply. It is my only option since I am 29 and too old for standard OCS applications. The school is so small that if so much as 2 more white kids sign up for school there before I'm done this November, it might drop below the 25%. :icon_rage :)
Sorry to be the bearer... go to the Blue21 section of the USCG recruiting website and there will be a link and number for the Blue21 coordinator if you have any questions for them.
