Aviator Pipeline Selection

Fight to Fly....Fly to Fight !!
Anyone know how this works? Like when you finish Primary, do they say ok the navy has x-amount of slots for jets/ x-amount for props/ x-amount for helos...and then let the guy with the highest scores pick first and go down the line from there?

For NFO's, you're asked to fill out a dream sheet after your last flight in Primary. The next morning they hold a little graduation ceremony where they call your name, announce your selection, and your classmates clap. As I remember it appeared that they worked very hard to give you what you wanted. The student control secretary announced that everyone got what the had asked for. Back then there was a draft for jet NFO's. Counter logical to what you might think, many of the highest NSS's selected Props. They were prior enlisted aircrew and wanted to return to the P-3 mafia where they probably had a good idea of what the job entailed and would therefore get the EP on their FITREP.

This is not a bad guess really. It does (sort of) work like that. You fill out your selection card and submit it. Then your squadron reads them and makes recommendations. Then it is sent to CNATRA and they make the final assignments. There is a best scores go first guideline. However, the only rule is that the needs of the Navy/Marine Corps come first, your preferences come second.

There is some flexibility in the number of slots for that week. For example, suppose a good student puts E-6 first. There are not usually any E-6 slots, nor people who want them. So they will (if they can) pull an E-6 slot from a later week. Likewise, if there are no students who are qualified for jets, they will redistribute those jet slots to later weeks. There are many factors, but they all weigh in behind closed doors. To a student, this how the selection process looks.

1. Complete program
2. Get score
3. Submit preference card
4. The Skipper informs you what you got.

Or in special cases, you get pulled out of T-44 ground school and are informed you are going to South Park!

E2 select, now flying Helos.

yeah, on selection day at whiting, we worked through a couple six packs before the skipper came in to reveal our fates ... no one my week got real "bad news," but i'm sure the buzz would've helped soften the blow if we had.

Back in 95, in VT-27, we just walked into Stu Con and there was sheet posted with who got what. We were told there were only 4 jet slots and 9 of us had the grades so expect P-3's (no helo slots). Ended up with 5 jets and 2 E-2/C-2 slots....perhaps to help some folks out. Top guy in our class ended up with Jets, Tomcats, then FNAEB'ed out.

Field Naval Aviator Evaluation Board. It is convened for mishaps, poor performance, etc. His was for poor performance and was booted but he got to keep his wings.....a B1 result I believe.

That is correct...worst thing to be a part of...a FNAEB that is...

God bless the quality spread. This is going to happen a bit in the near future as the active Navy fleet goes to 56% helo by 2010...But if this happens to you, realize about 97% of helo bubbas love their job & you're still damn lucky to be able to do it (and get paid).
