ASW without puke?! Not in my Navy!!

Time to talk about "Come To Jesus" moments within communities:

The Fighter Community It knew it was "fucked up beyond all recognition" (e.g., FUBAR) in the late-middle 1960's. Not their fault either..."Big Navy" had opted for "missiles instead of guns"...the big bombers were the threat....we'd never go "close-in air combat again"...no guns required...you get the idea. Brave and visionary souls (most of whom never promoted) told the CNO that that Navy was fucked up...here's what it will take to FIX it...if you really give a shit. Turned out that the CNO DID give a shit, and within two years, (following the instantiation of TOPGUN) the Navy's kill ratio turned from 2-1 to 13-1. One vignette. TOPGUN wasn't the only part of the solution...there was MUCH, MUCH else... But let's just say that the VF community went "all in" to fix their known deficiencies. Blood was shed...but it paid off. We got better...

TOPGUN influence included a LOT of "other folks"...CG (e.g., RED CROWN) controllers, E-2 controllers, etc. Anyone who "influenced" the A-A fight was welcomed... and included...and got better. "Top Dome" (the CAEWS Weapons School was/is a direct result....).. We ALL got better...

The Attack Community (for whom I have nothing but the highest respect) got their "wake up call" as a result of observed deficiencies in combat over Lebanon in 1983 and other driving forces, at which time the Naval Strike Warfare Center (NSWC)was established by direction of the Secretary of the Navy, John Lehman, in May 1984. The VA communities were NOT...IMHO...to blame. Shitty/criminal C2 and top-down direction were to blame. Too long a story to go into here. Every pilot and BN launched...some without ordnance...and not all came back alive. Part of our mutual legacy.... But we ALL got better...

The ASWCommunity Last shot fired in anger, so far as we "open press" folks can glean...was ...TA-DA!...I have no idea! WWII?
If that's your proud legacy and benchmark, how do you KNOW how you're doing? You may be great (in the sims...)..but you may be totally inept. But how do you KNOW?...and what do you folks DO to address perceived issues, if there are any? Is there a "Captain John Ault" within YOUR community who will make a difference?

Sorry for the rant. Again, "I don't know shit from Shinola about ASW". I hope to God some of you do....and are willing to go "all in" to make a difference.

Good thing that's the only AOR with a submarine problem...I guess.

It's the only AOR where they come out with the sort of regularity and aggressiveness that even approaches the Cold War era.

Is this a "way too little..way too late" story? I'm happy the Admiral was ecstatic....and most enemy subs will always fire their torps AFTER they surface...

Admittedly, from just that segment, sounds like a bad day to me.

Admittedly...tell me more.

SURTASS, fast attacks, tailed escorts. And like gator said, there's a planning aspect to task those assets to complement each other.

Can we all take a knee and pray to always be in "the right AOR"?

If we're in the "wrong AOR" that just means the threat is substantially less.
Even where it's not normally done, we haven't exactly been caught totally flatfooted. I got TAD'd to the Theater ASW cell when the Russkies sent out their Akulas into the Atlantic back in 2009. Wasn't the total shitshow you might think. No idea about the more recent claim.

Standard R1 Caveat: I don't know shit from Shinola about ASW. Part of me is starting to wonder if anyone else really does either...

Still plenty of folks around that do and they come out of the woodworks when shit gets real. Lot of civilians and Reservists.

It's not like I'm totally uninformed...
Your posts would imply otherwise. Might be time for you to execute another one of these:

Shot fired in anger doesn’t equal non-proficiency, just WWIII hasn’t happened. Plenty of Soviet/Russian boats were tracked and solutions calculated. And I’m guessing that many exercises were/are carried out using our boats. If we can track a 688, we can track an Akula. If we can track an Ohio, we can track a ghost, let alone a ChiCom diesel boat.

I'm just waiting for R1 to start pontificating about the USMC Assault Support community. Probably something else he doesn't know shit from shinola about, but will probably lecture me on, you know - because it's not like he's totally uniformed...

You have just dropped a notch in my personal "respect meter". Not that either of us really care.
If I can't debrief you on talking out your ass about a topic you've admitted that you know nothing about... in front of a room full of SMEs, then where does that leave us?

Picking stuff up, dropping stuff off, fly low, fold maps, talk about your "ramp".....is that it, or did I miss a minor point?

Case in point, how many A/A kills does the VF/VFA community have post Vietnam? I guess we're all fucked.

As with your VF examples, those that can make a difference are doing so.
