The rule about getting your reserve retirement earlier is that any active duty time except for your normal reserve stuff (drills and AT) qualifies, and it is every 90 days of active duty you serve within a FY that qualifies you for retirement pay (but not TRICARE) 90 days earlier. It has to be in the same FY though, so if you start your one-year MOB on 20 July those first 70 or so days don't count, the 90 day clock restarts on 1 October. Here are some links explaining it:

So that means every set of 90+ day ADT orders the SAU guys fly on furlough gets them retirement 90 days earlier in return? There's been a lot of confusion about that in our Reserve Office... Do the orders have to be "involuntary" or does the same thing happen with "voluntary" orders?

I did a little digging and found this from BUPERS:

"10 USC 12731 has also been changed to allow qualified Reservists to start receiving retired pay earlier than age 60. Effective 29 January 2008, each 90-day aggregate of active duty completed in a fiscal year will allow a member to begin receiving retired pay three months earlier than age 60. Medical benefits eligibility remains at age 60, and only service performed on or after 29 January 2008 counts. Active duty service which will not count towards the aggregate includes active duty performed in a regular component and active duty performed under 10 USC 12310 (e.g., FTS, CANREC, and RPN recall orders associated with organizing, administering, recruiting, instructing, or training the Reserve components)."

Seems to me to be pretty clear that says it includes all active duty time barring the regular drills, AT time and what falls under 10 USC 12310 with no differentiation between voluntary and involuntary orders. From a quick read of 10 USC 12310 folks on ADT doing instructor duty may not qualify:

"Reserve on active duty under subsection (a) may perform the following additional duties to the extent that the performance of those duties........Instructing or training in the United States or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico or possessions of the United States of......active-duty members of the armed forces"

I would call BUPERS though to get the official word on that though and any other qualifiers they might have WRT to this. Let us know what you find out!
