I took the ASTB for the first time today, 76 9/6/8. I'm applying for SNA, so I'm trying to figure out if I need to retake and try to get my PFAR score up so it's on par with my other scores. I'm a senior in Mechanical Engineering, 3.74 GPA.

I've been lurking on this thread for a few weeks and all the info and google drives have been a huge study aid. I've been studying whenever I have free time for the past 2 weeks. For anyone who's interested, here's what I studied:

MST - I didn't spend too much time on this because of my major. I had a lot of questions on averages, along the lines of "if you get this on your homework and it's worth x% of your grade, what do you have to get on your exam to get y grade" I did have one log question, something like log3(log8(logx)) = -1 and find x. I did have one asking for combinations of license plates with 3 digits (of which the first could not be zero) followed by 4 letters, which would be 9*10*10*26*26*26*26 = 411278400 but I got caught up in the multiplication of 26^4 and ended up guessing the answer based on order of magnitude.

RCT - I thought I wasn't doing great in this section, there was a lot of dense text and similar answer choices. My best advice is read your options carefully and don't second-guess yourself.

MCT - This was easy because of my major. I didn't have any questions on levers, but I had one that was something like "if these buckets have equal amounts of water in them and barrel A is 50°F and barrel B is 120°F, which barrel will float higher?" and a lot on pulleys.

ANIT - I had a few questions on the empennage, some on historical aircraft, and some on

PBM - Study the flashcards for the UAV section, they help a lot. I averaged around 2 seconds on each one and got maybe 2 wrong.

My recruiter suggested I play this game called War Thunder to practice with a joystick, and I think it helped some but not a lot. Like a lot of people have said, there's a huge dead zone in the throttle, which makes it kind of hard to get the hang of. For the tracking + throttle portion, I focused on the tracking screen and watched the throttle in my periphery, which seemed to work well. I didn't feel like I was doing well at all to begin with, but I definitely improved before I completed the test. Dichotic listening wasn't bad, I leaned my head to the side I was listening to so I could keep track of which ear I was listening to while I did the tracking exercises. I wrote down the emergency procedures and had no issues there.

First off I would like to thank everyone who contributed to this forum!!!! I took the OAR for the second time this morning and scored a 60. Much improved from the 49 on my first test.

MST: A real grab bag this time around. Multiple questions asking for (2x^2+5x)^2)^3) - 4x^2+12x+13/4 or something along those lines. Only one DRT problem. Had one question that stated the area of a triangle is 24, what is it's perimeter? All in all pretty much what everyone has been saying. The test kicked me out with like 12 mins to go.

RCT: The worst. Make sure to read all the possible answers before choosing one!

MCT: Had the #4 in binary question. Pulleys and Lever questions. A scale asking how far a weight needs to be placed in order to balance the scale. Went really fast and finished with minutes to spare.

Thanks again everyone. I am applying for the mid OCT intel boards. Fingers crossed.

Hey everyone, so a really late post on my part but I just recently discovered this extremely helpful thread. And have been pretty embarrassed to post my scores but screw it.

Ok so I took my first test back in June with:
43 4/4/4
I honestly put in a low amount of effort as I work 45-50 hours week and was traveling A LOT. I’d study on the planes for what I could and on the weekends here and there, low priority until I left the exam room feeling extremely intellectually incapable.

I set my next test date for today and studied much more going back 3 weekends and my scores being:

41 4/6/5

Now I was confused as to why my OAR went down but the others went up? I thought I did OK but obviously my scores reflect my actual performance.

Now the thing I’m really questioning is my OR said I can take it a 3rd time no problem BUT he’s saying with my 2.55 GPA in Poli Sci, I need a 70 7/7/7 to submit. Is this crazy? I figured if I could get a 55-60 and 6/6/6+ I would be OK to submit for SNA/SNFO/Supply?

Anyone have any info? Or any recruiters on here/know any info if I’m just being tasked with something impossible so he can DQ me? He wants me to wait 60 days but gave me the scores above to reach. DM me if you have any answers and don’t want to post on here. I’m just looking for basic information, I’ve encountered not informative recruiters.

I am pretty sure you are well below the GPA requirements. From my understanding, I do not think you can even apply? I may be wrong. someone help me on this. However, if you are able to apply then these scores seem very reasonable with your GPA.

I took the ASTB for the second time last Friday. My scores went from a 53 5/6/5 to a 56 7/9/7. I'm just curious as to how competitive my scores are now with a 3.71 GPA. Obviously I wish my OAR was a little higher but I feel pretty good about getting a 9 on the PFAR. Just looking for some feedback. Thanks in advance!

You have a great shot, IMO. I was 56 7/8/7 with a 3.86 GPA and got a phone call the day the board met. Granted, every board is different, but a 9 PFAR and your high GPA should give you good odds.

What did you do between test 1 and test 2 to raise your scores? Other wannabes would love to hear how you succeeded.

I picked up Barron's Flight Aptitude test book and looked at a ton of the study guides on this forum. There are some really good flash cards if you work your way back a few pages on here.

For the hands on portion of the test, BE CONFIDENT. It can be very easy to panic and over compensate while working with the joystick and throttle. I know that was the big difference between getting a 6 the first time and a 9 now. If anyone has some more specific questions I'll do my best to answer them.

Did you practice any with inverted axis to improve the your PFAR or did you just change your approach and know what to expect??

I didn't practice with inverted axis but I'm sure that would help some people. Honestly, knowing what to expect was my biggest advantage the second time around. If anyone is on the fence about retaking the test I would recommend it.

Thanks, appreciate it!

Also, I know it exists somewhere on here but I cannot seem to find it.
Does anyone have the exact dichotic listening rules/procedures and the exact emergency scenarios handy?
Spent the last hour on here and cant seem to find them again.
