Just had my annual IGS a couple months ago. According to one of the slides the instructor had up, the Fore Flight app on your (insert your favorite hand held device here) is now authorized for use in the aircraft. You can load all the pubs you'll need on the device before you fly, and you can have the GPS on the device working while in flight. You still need to have the paper pubs in the jet to be legal. I'll try to track the guy down so I can get the actual regs on this.

That sounds like a pretty broad statement that would have to come from NAVAIR/OPNAV. Legality as a source of FLIP aside, the legality of actually flying with an iPad in some (probably most) aircraft is still heavily restricted AFAIK. Their use for OEF flights (limited to VFA) is for specific operational purposes.

I'm still waiting for the official message on this, but NAVAIR as of August last year was working on procuring IPAD's for use in the aircraft specifically to act as a Digital Nav Bag to replace all those paper pubs.

And where does it specifically state that you have to have "Paper" documents. if I have the current Approach Plates, FLIP, IFR sup, etc in digital format, how is that not adequate?

I see no problem with it as long as there's some redundancy for equipment failure, even if that amounts to testing that says the iPad is reliable enough to not need redundancy. That's just me though. NAVAIR can be sticklers for detail sometimes.

My iPad is personally owned, thank you very much - and I didn't get the ghetto model the Navy bought. :D

You could have accepted it anyway and just used it as a coaster. I bet there is an app for that.

Most definitely - but the training you guys get in VT-land is aimed at making single-seat guys and gals, right? I can't say for sure why, but something in there has to play into the lack of acceptance of ASAP in the TACAIR community vice other communities where it's been making steady inroads, as it's the only common thing. (I haven't seen or heard about ASAP numbers/acceptance in VT-86 but would really like to hear from the double-anchor side of the house about it.)
Well the pilot side is geared that way, and I can't speak for the Hornets. But if you walk into VAQ-land as a brand-new LTJG pilot with a "single seat" mentality intent on keeping it, you're cruising for a bruising. CRM will make or break a Prowler crew.

I can't recall about ASAP in VT-86. Somewhere along the line, NATOPS, PWTP, or the Manual for Courts-Martial pushed that penguin off the iceberg . . .

We did ASAP's after every flight in jet VT's, and then I never did another once I got to the RAG. My current squadron, now that I'm back to the Navy, does them so I don't really think it is a single-seat vs others thing.

My experience was:

Navy tracom/VT : does ASAP
Marine RAG: doesn't even know what ASAP is
Navy fleet sqdn: does ASAP

Only conclusion I can draw is that its big in the Navy

I saw a stud today ask the ready room what the identifier for Santa Rosa is while writing up an ASAP.

There is hope.

From what I remember, we did it after every flight in VT-86, and the ASO briefed the studs on any reports that had worthwhile learning points. In the rag and now in my fleet squadron, the ASO encourages us to submit them, but it's definitely not stressed as much as in VT land.
