Mr. President-elect, I believe the whole point of a 5th Generation fighter is to make the 4th Generation fighter irrelevant, sir..

Nope. A Rhino may not be in almost any way comparable to an F-35, but the latter doesn't make the former irrelevant either, nor is it really intended to.

True, but do you honestly think that what he thinks he's asking for?

I'm all about streamlining and generally cleaning up the acquisition world; my two cents is that industry has got DoD bent over and DoD keeps looking back whimpering "is it innovative yet?" So in that sense, yeah, stick it to LM, Boeing, Northrup, et al.... On the other hand, I have a bad feeling that DJT thinks acquisition programs are kinda like houses and hotels in Monopoly...

Of course not. This is flag waving public negotiations similar to the Carrier situation, meant to project strength to the public. DoD had its chance to push a mix of 4.5/5th gen platforms 5-10 years ago when JSF stumbled and it didn't for a multitude of reasons. But pushing that button now?

We're all smart enough to realize actually changing acquisition laws directly threatens business players in almost every congressional district, making it politically toxic.

Touche.

Irrelevant was wrong for me to say. My amateur opinion would say a 5th Gen should have an all other factors equal advantage over a 4th Gen. Not to say the Hornet or Viper are incapable, because they have proven they are not. However, would you want to pit a F-22 against a Rhino?

One could also ask, if you are a grunt calling for ground support, would you rather have a F-22, F-35 or F/A-18 check in?

As I've often said on here, there's almost no point in even trying to discuss air to air capabilities at the unclass level, but suffice to say that while the F-35 and F-22 share some characteristics, they are fundamentally different in how they relate to their 4th Gen wingmen. The F-22 is more to do things others can't; the F-35 is more of a force multiplier to make 4th Gen aircraft more effective than they would be otherwise.

That's when the JTACs eventually learn how to game the system, and request 30mm and other ordnance only the A-10 carries. If you ain't cheating you ain't trying I spose.

If you're just looking to avoid getting FA-18s from the boat, you could also request flexible on station time and a targeting pod that can distinguish a MAM from a fucking camel.

Hope someone gave a heads-up to the Black Aces.
My all-time favorite caption fail is still the T-45 CQ det where they labeled the Goosehawks as part of the SAR det's HS squadron.
