OCS 02Nov20 SNA/SNFO (Pilot/NFO) Board

quick question, are you required or highly recommended to get interview appraisal? Looking @kyleerlich post on the other forum is the first I’ve heard of it.
right now I have only provided the following:
3 LORs with REF form: O-6 Blue Angels Captain, O-6 Flight Surgeon & Senator
Motivational statement
NASIS
ASTB
MEPS with wavers

My recruiter just picked up a few new recruiting stations and is swamped and I think this is his first time submitting for SNA/NFO. So any onsite would be very helpful
I am not sure what the application requirements are for civilians applying to OCS. For personnel who are already in the service, we fall under the guidance of the OPNAVINST 1420.1B (Enlisted to Officer Commissioning Programs Application Administrative Manual), which mandates that we include at least 3 officer appraisal interview sheets, and at least 1 of those interviews must be conducted by an officer with the designator for which we are applying.

Take it with a fistful of salt, but I've heard that prior flight time in general doesn't really "boost" an application since the Navy's way of flying doesn't always mesh with how they do things in general aviation.

Like, it seems to be the case that the boards would prefer a high GPA and ASTB scoring candidate over someone who has a bunch of hours but a lower ASTB/GPA. That being said, flight time should definitely help with doing well on the ASTB, and I have heard that instrument rating can help you out during the pipeline.

I could be completely wrong though, this is just from what I've seen browsing on this forum and r/newtothenavy.

Just officially submitted my application for SNA! Now the waiting game begins, but I feel like a weight has been lifted off of my shoulders :)

One of my candidates had significant flight hours and ratings, scored 5's and 6's, great GPA though, he ended up taking it 3 times, third time he hit an 8 on the PFAR and was selected on subsequent board.

I have done my research but I would like to hear this classes up to date opinion.

I have two wavers that have been approved.
  1. Minor food allergy in the past
  2. Childhood ADHD (doctors throw this diagnosis on every high energy kid)

Have any of y’all heard of the board viewing these types of wavers negatively when making decisions. Or are they not as concerned with past medical issues as character and intellect?

It is a professional review board, they do not see medical as they don't need to.

Applying for NFO. I went to MEPS around the beginning of August, got my medical waiver accepted, packet submitted, and now waiting on word if I have an interview or not.

Greetings everyone. I was hoping to be on this board but my MEPS date is being held up because I went to MEPS with the army 2 years ago. Sucks, because my physical expires on the 12th of this month and they're being slow about sharing/releasing my info. I'll be following this thread regardless. Good luck to all of you!

Edit: Forgot to add scores/stats

Prior Service: No
Age:
29
Degree/GPA:
B.S. Aviation Studies/4.0 (although GPAs from previous schools will most likely bring that down? 2.3 and 2.6)
ASTB: 61 7/6/7
Flight Experience: 15 hours/1 solo

Impressive scores from everyone so far. I applied to the May board for SNA and wasn't picked up, applying to SNA, NFO and SWO this time. Kit is done and being submitted today. Hoping for SNA!

Someone asked what everyone's motivational statement was? Mine was 766 words, (4497 Characters). I cut mine down from the original 6,000 character limit and that was a challenge to get under 4,500 and still maintain the same quality and impact.

I was prior service but wasn't picked up the first time, I think it's more than simply having one beneficial factor in your corner. My scores were high enough to carry me through (several others were selected with lower scores than mine), but I think they expected more in the objective ASTB scores and a more substantial motivational statement that quantified and explained several things. Simply relying on prior service would be a mistake. I think the prior service thing is great, if you can effectively translate your service to the current application, otherwise it just isn't a factor.
