Why navy?

If you need to be convinced to Fly Navy, the Navy probably isn't for you . . .

The navy has always been my first choice. Nothing is better in my eyes. I've just been getting a lot of advice from other people to look at other options. And I wanted to see what you guys think.

No one on airline pilot forums was telling you to join a guard fighter unit. Off the street at a tanker/heavy unit is probably more feasible. If you want fighters, you are more likely to get them from going active duty. And it's not 15%

Sorry but before I go make a big life decision such as this, I'm going to try and get some opinions of people who have been there and done it.
Nothing at all wrong with trying to get information about an important decision like this. However, questions like "why navy" "what are my chances" "what is xxxxx community like" and many others have been asked and answered many many times on this site. Personally I think people asking the questions get piled on a bit excessively most of the time, but it also shows that the person asking hasn't actually spent much if any time reading this site.

Making Recruiting Great Again
Sorry but before I go make a big life decision such as this, I'm going to try and get some opinions of people who have been there and done it.

Start by going here:

And here:
https://www.airwarriors.com/communi...-your-commission-the-condensed-version.14736/

If you want to know what the selection boards are looking for search and browse here:
https://www.airwarriors.com/community/index.php?threads/what-nrc-considers-competitive.41212/

If you have any medical history/issues about joining go here:
https://www.airwarriors.com/community/index.php?threads/medical-condition-bible.41006/

Take the initiative and start searching around the forums. Your question has been answered countless times and your situation isn't any different than the hundreds on folks who have gone and asked before you. There are ALOT of opinions about aviation in the first link going back several years. This is just one link and there are likely several more "why Naval Aviation is great" or "why navy over..." threads.

Additionally, I wouldn't consider "reaching out to an officer recruiter" a major decision just yet. There are a lot of recruiting factors that ought to be discussed not only here, but with a local OR to better paint the picture the next several months and of course years. Until you check in to OCS you don't owe anything or are obligated to the Naval service. Call and set up a meeting to talk more about your options. I've talked to folks all the time who weren't sold or concerned about joining. Have the OR lay it all down to help determine what you'd like to pursue.

If you want more folks to help you out here, do the research on your own and then ask. It's fine to ask questions, we all have them. But when it's something that shows research and homework was put into it, you will very likely have a more receptive crowd.

Ok thanks. That clarifies a lot. Everybody over on APC makes it seam like a walk in the park to pick up a guard spot. I will trust you guys over them seeing that most of them aren't military pilots and a lot of you guys have been through the ropes.

It's a walk in the park if your dad or uncle was a prominent member of the unit and was liked by everyone else. They are selecting someone to be in their squadron for an entire career, it's not a quick decision. Plus the Guard isn't a secret and a unit generally has 1 or 2 flight school spots a year and about 50 or more applicants.

I was only responsible for 2 of those in a P-3. How many in a C-40, well that's TBD.
The XO from my old squadron is lucky to be alive after a landing with the gear out of battery. It ripped one of his landing gear off and sent him into the dirt at 140kts. Of course it was notam'd as completely de-rigged, and it wasn't a navy base. Not trying to be a Debbie downer, but just saying.

So I've talked with a few people over on airline pilot forums as well as some other forums. They all say to avoid ad navy at all costs and only go into the guard or reserves. I would like to hear the other side and see what you current naval aviators have to say about this. What do you guys like about the navy and dislike about the guard that made you choose navy?

Thanks
If your goal is something beyond the Navy (landing on boats, leading sailors), then go guard/reserve. It's the absolute best deal going. And yes I am prepared for the dogpile against me, as per usual.

And if your goal is to FLY, never go VR C-130s :D
